Yeah, pretty much - my two favorite Android devices are rooted, and one runs a custom ROM from CyanogenMod.  
Google has a bloatware problem on its Android phones. But now that it's going to be a mobile carrier, it could make everything that sucks go away.

Yep, bought a refurb OG Nexus 7 tablet for cheap and updated it to Lollipop.  I tried the Lollipop CM build that was available but didn't like the UI.
