I have also been impressed by Google demo, but honestly, I would like to try it to assess how good it is in practice. How many call did they have to do to get those ones?

Chrome OS is a low (or no) maintenance system. Mixing this with a VM to run Linux apps could mix the best of both world: Powerful Linux apps with a secure, self-maintaining system.
However, I guess it will rely heavilly on the cloud for storage.
