IDEAS FOR COACHING GAMIFICIATON?

Research supports that games are effective for learning, but no evidence supports games as the preferred instructional method in all learning situations. So how do you know if gamifying is appropriate for any given lesson, unit, course, or classroom environment? How do you know if a specific instructional task warrants leveling up? How do you keep the focus on learning without letting competition become the enemy? Many teachers are willing to gamify but struggle with purposeful implementation and are quickly left distributing meaningless reward structures with little significance that students don’t value.

As instructional technologists and/or experienced gamifiers, what recommendations, strategies, or simple checklist items can we offer teachers to help them PLAY before they PLAY?

I'm Michelle Smith an Instructional Media Specialist in Grand Prairie. I work specifically at Dubiski Career High School were I support approximately 1600 students and 100 teachers in a 1:1 laptop environment. This is my 22nd year in education, and I'm a former English teacher!
