How much paid time off do you get?
San Francisco is making labor history by becoming the first U.S. city to require employers to offer fully paid leave to new parents.

I can't lie. I'm geeking out about this movie as if I were 12 years old all over again.

It's calling to you.
Check out the first official TV spot for #StarWars: #TheForceAwakens, coming to theaters December 18, 2015.

They spend more time with their small screens than they do with us parents. A revealing study from +Common Sense Media.
If it seems as if teenagers are spending a lot of time connected to their screens, that's because they are. About a quarter of their day, to be exact.

I'm learning a whole lot about lunchtime from the parents' perspective with my son. It's taking some manner of alchemy to figure out the magic behind getting him fed properly.

#parenting
In the continuing quest to improve the health quotient of school lunches, experts have proposed fancy chefs , cutesy lunch boxes and smiley-faced stickers . Now comes a more straightforward suggestion – just make the lunch period longer.

Bullying leaves a forever bruise.

Back-to-school season evokes the sheen of pristine white sneakers and squeaky clean lockers. But for many students, back to school also means back to bullying.

I was intrigued to see a section in our school's parent-teacher handbook specifically about this.
The school year is just beginning, but grades are already in on parent-teacher communication: needs improvement.

I found this exploration on coolinfographics.com of Santa's delivery feats quite intriguing -- and timely. Ho ho ho...

A cougar climbed on top of a 35-foot pole near... wait for it... Cougar Buttes, California (a real place).
Cats climbing stuff is hardly worth mentioning. But a cougar up a power pole? Now that’s impressive.

James Blake Says Wife Inspired Him to Speak Out About Being Mistakenly Detained by NYPD

+Good Morning America: Former tennis pro James Blake describes being tackled and arrested by an undercover NYPD officer: "He picked me up and body slammed me and put me on the ground and told me to turn over and shut my mouth and put the cuffs on me. [...] At no time did he let me know he was a police officer. He just put the cuffs on me and said, ‘Stand up.'" Blake is seeking an apology for the 'blatant' case of excessive use of force.

Former tennis pro James Blake says the first person he called after being thrown to the ground and handcuffed by New York City police officers Wednesday in a case of mistaken identity was his wife, and she is the reason he is speaking publicly about the incident. “Immediately, I was furious because I thought about what I would be thinking if someone did that to my wife, if someone tackled her in broad daylight, paraded her around in a busy, crowd...

How much do you think the teacher needs to know about what's going on at home?

My son starts at his very first school next week. The school handbook includes this passage: "If a family problem arises that might affect your child's attitude, performance, or emotional disposition at school, e.g., death or illness in the family, parents on trips, parental separation or divorce, please notify an administrator or your child's teachers. Confidentiality will be maintained at all times."

Personally, I'm always open to do what is best for my kids, even if it means talking with his teacher about something embarrassing or private.

What do you think?

I was really intrigued that my son's teachers also asked us parents to write them a letter essentially introducing the unique characteristics and interests of our kids. (One of my most challenging recent writing assignments, I must admit.)
