The cover article of the April 2012 issue of Discover Magazine, entitled "Life at the Edge of Space: Do high-flying microbes control Earth's weather?", features the impact of biological aerosol on what is perhaps the most chemically sensitive cloud process: ice crystal formation.
The chemical influence of atmospheric aerosols on ice nucleation in clouds has been a significant focus of the Prather Research Group over the last 5 years, beginning with the ICE-L field campaign in 2007, where ice cloud particles were sampled directly into an ATOFMS for the first time -- this was also the first deployment of an ATOFMS on an aircraft platform (NSF/NCAR C-130). Since that first deployment, our Aircraft ATOFMS (a.k.a. - Shirley) has been included on 4 more aircraft-based field campaigns, including two focused on the influence of atmospheric aerosol chemistry on cloud ice nucleation: CalWater 2011 and ICE-T. Through these studies, and the work of others in our field, we are coming to understand the importance of biological material on the formation of ice particles in clouds -- a crucial element in understanding, for instance, the amount of precipitation that a storm will produce.

OK, so I go over to 's content area on Facebook, and respond to his post about +PandoDaily, (which is here: https://www.facebook.com/max.woolf/posts/326466947419794 ) but Facebook keeps me from posting the below comment. It gave me this error. Looks like Facebook is doing content analysis in real time before it will let you post and is looking to keep the service "happy." I sure wonder now what kind of algorithms Facebook is running on content.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? I haven't, and I've posted tons of comments to Facebook.
I'm so glad I didn't start a media business. It's actually really tough to get new and interesting stories and to avoid falling into drama. People forget that Techcrunch was built step-by-step as a new publishing form was taking shape. PandoDaily doesn't have that advantage and, is, indeed, facing competition from social networks that is quite good indeed.
I no longer visit blogs. I watch Twitter, Google+, and Facebook, along with Hacker News, Techmeme, Quora. These are the new news sources.
Plus, Pando Daily actually doesn't have enough capital to compete head on with, say, D: All Things Digital or The Verge, both of which are expanding quickly and have ecosystems behind them.
UPDATE: we're discussing this over on Facebook too: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150829960634655&set=a.458123019654.251938.501319654&type=1
UPDATE! IT was announced! I'll order it today, they ship on March 16th so when I get it, I'll send it to the winner!
Here is how to enter:
1) You gotta have me in a Circle. Got that? Cool.
2) Publicly share this post!
That's it! So, if you want to be one of the first people to get your hands on an iPad3 here is your first chance!!! I'll announce the winner one week from today.
Oh, and this is only for US and Canada folks. Sorry! I love you guys across the pond but shipping is very, very difficult and expensive for these types of things.
PS - For those of you who are skeptical, YES - I really am giving away the new iPad. And and I give away stuff all the time. Most of the time we get things donated because of our show (GeekBeat.TV), but in this case I'm paying for the new iPad out of my own pocket and one of you lucky souls will win it. Enjoy!
