Now this is cool. 100 authors are going to submit their work to the "Future Library," where they will sit unpublished and unread for 100 years! They'll be kept in a specially-designed room of the new Deichman Library in Oslo. 1,000 trees were planted nearby; they'll later be cut down to provide the paper on which the texts will be printed as an anthology of books in 2114. Margaret Atwood (my hero) is the first author to sign on. http://bbc.in/1As1UiB
Margaret Atwood becomes the first of 100 authors to enter a manuscript into the Future Library, a project collecting works not to be published until 2114.

With Mad Men ending, this is fun timing. Top 10 lessons writers can learn from Mad Men: "Go epic or go home." And, weirdly, "Never underestimate the power of a French woman."

There are a couple of writing rules for digital that I really like here. "Know your audience" is one, for every kind of writing, really. I also like "write like you talk," at least where digital's concerned.
While trends online move at quicksilver speed, the fundamentals of digital storytelling are essentially the same as writing for other media but the magic lies in matching voice to channel

Good tutorial on hyphens and dashes and why they shouldn't be used interchangeably. What I often see is space hyphen space in place of an em dash (which requires no extra space). If you get it right, it shows some good editorial chops.
Are hyphens and dashes driving you bananas? Here's a quick guide to help you keep things straight.

Letters and stories that #MarkTwain wrote when he was a newspaperman at the San Francisco Chronicle (then called the San Francisco Dramatic Chronicle) have been uncovered. It was a hard time for him. He was in debt and drinking heavily, and wrote in one letter “If I do not get out of debt in three months – pistols or poison for one – exit me.”
Cache shows Twain working as a newspaper man in San Francisco as a young man as Berkeley archivists describe stash ‘like opening up a big box of candy’

The one rule at your significant other's holiday party, says mashable, is to "be nice." http://on.mash.to/1hXGEpM And they go on to give examples of how. For instance, "be equally warm with everyone." Do any of you out there have your own special rules?
It's holiday party season -- and that includes events held by your clients and significant other’s employers.

So this is a list of "under-the-radar" books that NPR's Nancy Pearl thinks are worth a read. I like the looks of The Swimmer by Joakim Zander.
NPR's go-to books guru has sent Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep a stack of books — titles she thinks deserve more attention. Here are her fiction picks, to kick off your summer reading.

Ten writing tips from the recently passed away, legendary writing teacher William Zinssner. I'll cherry pick a couple here for you. "Read everything you write out loud for rhythm and sound." And "develop a respect for words and a curiosity about their shades of meaning that is almost obsessive."
Zinsser stressed simplicity and efficiency, but also style and enthusiasm. Here are 10 of his many tips for improving your writing.

Wish this were true, that I never put my book down. But it's the real world so working, cooking, cleaning, all have to be factored in. Good part? The characters in the books actually do wait for you.
