No, Ted Cruz Doesn’t Want Federal Regulation of Home Schooling

Contrary to what some bloggers (many of whom support Donald Trump’s presidential campaign) and the Internet rumor mill have been saying, Sen. Ted Cruz does not support federal regulation of home schooling.

The source of the myth is Cruz’s co-sponsorship of S.306, a bill introduced during this session of Congress by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT). Some form of the bill has been introduced since 2000, but the measure has never been controversial until presidential campaign politics intervened. What the measure does is expand who can use Coverdell education savings accounts by clarifying that for the purpose of Coverdell expenses only, the term “private school” includes home schools that operate under a state’s home school law.

[...]

Contrary to some rumors, S.306 does not create a federal definition for home schooling. That’s something that would spark opposition from HSLDA, and the organization supports S.306 in its current form.

Opponents of Cruz and S.306 argue that giving home schoolers access to education savings accounts creates federal regulations for home education and, they insist, results in federal aid to home education that invariable comes with strings.

That is just not true.

Coverdell accounts operate just like an IRA or a health savings account. Just like a savings account or checking account, the money in a Coverdell, IRA or HSA comes from deposits made by the account holder. The advantage of a Coverdell over a regular bank account is that, just like an IRA or HSA, after the money is deposited it can grow with interest and not encounter a tax penalty as long as the money is withdrawn to pay education expenses. In the case of IRAs and HSAs the money is withdrawn to pay for retirement or health care expenses.

As a provision of the tax code, Coverdells have a similar function as tax credits or tax deductions. Families frequently take advantage of the child tax credit, standard deductions or itemized deductions to reduce their tax liability. Coverdell accounts function as a means of controlling tax liability.

Haha, this is a VERY clever and humorous hit on Marco Rubio over his support for amnesty and his involvement with the Gang of 8. Well played Team Cruz!

SC Poll: Trump 32, Cruz 26, Rubio 20, Bush 10

A new poll is out from South Carolina, the Weekly Standard reports. And guess what? Ted Cruz is surging FAST. According to RCP's old polling average (there were no new polls conducted after Iowa), Ted was trailing Donald Trump back then, 36% versus 19%. That 16-point gap is now reduced to... a mere 6 points. Trump 32, Ted 26.

Take into account that Trump had a BIGGER lead in Iowa, but that Cruz's groundgame beat him there, and you suddenly realize that Ted can truly win South Carolina.

Better yet: I believe he will!

Let's pray even more for Ted, his family, and his campaign than we all already do!

Marcy Rubio Takes on Donald Trump Over 'P**sy' Comment

"Profanity from a stage."

As #CruzCrew  we've had problems with Rubio in the past, and we'll undoubtedly have them again, but it's good of him to criticize Trump for insulting Cruz like this.

Rubio's comments reflected the political and social makeup of South Carolina, a mannerly state where defense and national security issues are central.

Dana Loesch: If Carson Doesn't Drop Out, It Means He's in It for Himself

"Now, it's clear to anyone with half a brain that Carson's campaign is doomed. He disappointed in Iowa -- a state where he should have competed for the top spot -- and barely registered in New Hampshire. RealClearPolitics' poll of polls still has him in fifth place in South Carolina (with 8.7%), but those polls were conducted well before the Iowa caucuses. In other words, he will undoubtedly have fallen even further behind in the meantime.

"Carson himself is, of course, fully aware of these facts and therefore knows he doesn't have a chance. He's done. Stick a fork in it.

"Yet, he stays in. Why?"

It's an article from before the New Hampshire primary, but that doesn't matter. Let's pass it on to people in South Carolina and in the rest of the nation!

While Christians cannot speak of the faith of the unknown fourth candidate, we can speak of the Christian faith of the first three.

Pearson had this response to the faith of those in the New Hampshire primary:

"Trump. Really? By their fruits you shall know them. I don't have to bash Trump for you to know his lifestyle, his past record of supporting liberal causes and candidates, and the way he spouts off in a most un-Christlike way.

"Rubio is a good man," Pearson told me. "He's a strong believer. He gives honor to Jesus publicly (and I think sincerely), but he bounces around, splitting his allegiance/attendance between RC and evangelical.

Continues Pearson: "Ted Cruz is by far and most clearly the most dedicated believer in the race. Also, it's not just what is he saying (which is important) but what he been saying and doing.

"Cruz is unquestionably pro-life. Has said many times he will open an investigation into the allegations against Planned Parenthood people to see if crimes were committed and if there's enough evidence, he will move to indict.

"He will not just support bills that are pro-life, he will push for them.

"The next president will name one to three Supreme Court justices, and Ted's litmus tests include pro-life from conception.

"Ted strongly states that marriage is between one man and one woman.

"He will instruct all agencies to stop the harassment of individuals and groups based on their religious convictions. The IRS (which he hopes to abolish) will stop targeting faith-based groups.

"He will move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem."

While it takes more than winning in New Hampshire to gain the nomination and presidency, these early voting states hold a great deal of significance in this election.

The Cruz Campaign just sent out this email. Please read it and forward it (along with the links to donate) to your friends, family members, and everybody else you know.

Here it is:

Do you have a few minutes to read my email?

I hope you will stop what you are doing for just a moment and let me explain...

The results of the first two states are in, and it's clear that we are down to a two person race -- me vs. Donald Trump!

You also know -- the winner will take on Hillary Clinton.

Michael, let me be blunt. I can beat Hillary Clinton. Donald can't.

That is why I am asking you -- one of my closest and most loyal supporters -- will you redouble your support for me today?

I need you now more than ever, and let me tell you why.

When I first announced my campaign, Heidi and I committed that we would run an issues oriented, positive campaign. Unfortunately, my friend, Donald Trump, didn't make that same commitment.

While Donald continues with personal attacks -- and vulgar profanities -- I do not intend to respond, but that won't stop Donald.

He is so rattled by my surge in the polls, our victory in Iowa, and our strong finish in New Hampshire that he has decided to continue his scorched earth campaign in an attempt to burn down everyone and everything in his path.

I can't fault Donald for this...it's the only way he can distract voters from his record:
1. Support for Hillary-style healthcare;
2. Support for partial birth abortion;
3. Support for bank bailouts;
4. Support for Obama stimulus; and
5. Enthusiastic embrace of eminent domain.

Michael, will you help me set the record straight?

Without your help, he might get away with it...and if he does, say hello to President Hillary Clinton.

That's why I need your immediate help.

As I write this email to you, I'm being briefed that our Iowa and New Hampshire campaigns have taken a significant toll on my campaign budget. As of today, I'm still $490,700 short of my mid-month budget for February.

With South Carolina voting next in just days -- I can't afford to come up short. That's why I'm turning to you again. Will you help me make up the difference by using one of the secure links below?

$5: https://secure.campaignsolutions.com/tedcruz/list/wa/trump/?initiativekey=HHAPRVCK2QQZ&edon=5
$35: https://secure.campaignsolutions.com/tedcruz/list/wa/trump/?initiativekey=HHAPRVCK2QQZ&edon=35
$50: https://secure.campaignsolutions.com/tedcruz/list/wa/trump/?initiativekey=HHAPRVCK2QQZ&edon=50
$250: https://secure.campaignsolutions.com/tedcruz/list/wa/trump/?initiativekey=HHAPRVCK2QQZ&edon=250
$500: https://secure.campaignsolutions.com/tedcruz/list/wa/trump/?initiativekey=HHAPRVCK2QQZ&edon=500
$2700: https://secure.campaignsolutions.com/tedcruz/list/wa/trump/?initiativekey=HHAPRVCK2QQZ&edon=2700

You can make a HUGE impact on this campaign and help me win this nomination with an IMMEDIATE contribution -- no matter how small.

There is great strength in numbers.

With your personal contribution, you'll also be sending a big message to Donald Trump that tearing others down and misleading voters is not the best way to unite conservatives and make America great again.

Michael, I'll set the record straight on Donald's false attacks, secure the Republican nomination, AND DEFEAT HILLARY, but I can only get there with your continued help.

This is our time!

Together, we will reignite liberty in America.

For liberty,

Ted Cruz

Introduction
Blogger, columnist, new media entrepreneur. Oh, also: a soccer, cycling, baseball and kickboxing fan. Trying to make a difference.

11 facts about me:

1) My strength is I'm obsessive. This means I can work hard - very hard. The downside? I'm obsessive.

2) I believe in working hard and playing hard, but never seem to get around to part II.

3) Born and raised in the Netherlands, I'm happily living in Izmir, or as I prefer to call it: heaven on earth.

4) I absolutely love the political game. And yes, it is a game. Years ago, I actually got worked up about it, but nowadays, I see every move, every decision, every plan as a strategic move. Looking at politics that way has only increased my love for it (and for my job).

5) Dogs are awesome. I miss mine tremendously.

6) I'm a family man, but don't need my family around me all the time. It's a contradiction in terms, but there you have it: an independent family guy.

7) I carry a book around me everywhere I go.

8) Another one of my companions is my notebook: I write down ideas when I have them, afraid to forget them when I have 'time' for them.

9) I hate it when people say they "can't" do something. What do you mean, you "can't?" You're limiting yourself! Get off your butt and start taking massive action.

10) I'm in love with my iPad.

11) Married to the love of my life I always feel I don't spend enough time with her. This creates a perpetual feeling of guilt.
