In an analysis of new data, Neil Ruiz tracks the local origins, size and growth rate of the foreign student population across the United States by metropolitan area. He finds that foreign students attending  U.S. colleges and universities on the F-1 visa bring billions of dollars each year to local economies and hold the potential for forging greater economic connections between U.S. regions and fast-growing cities in emerging markets.

Useful summary doc.

Great way to present data. Reality is that that exclusive club of universities is pretty small.

I completely agree with you. It's actually worse since you can produce more "Lacoste shirts" and satisfy demand, but our most prestigious universities don't tend to grow at all.  Parents around the world are looking to get their kids in the top 10, 25, 50, 100 -- but a very limited number of schools are considered.

Michael Waxman-Lenz's +1's are the things they like, agree with, or want to recommend.
I was really impressed with the service and efficiency. Despite a lot of foot traffic, the numbering system moved fast and worked well. Furthermore, I didn't have a copy of my passport for the visa application. And the Chinese visa officer just directed me upstairs to make a copy (25 cents) and return to his window. This little bit of thoughtful planning of having a copy machine available, saved me time and inconvenience. I will be picking up my visa shortly, let's hope that my second experience will be equally positive.
