Trust me? Of course you do.  I have a narrow face.

Here's a UCR study that shows that men with wider faces are considered to be more aggressive, less trustworthy and more prone to engaging in deception.

Ouch. Outsourcing quality fail is something I've had a brush with lately.  Lessons learned:  At minimum, hiring managers must know the protocols and laws for each channel campaign.  Your provider should be verified as a specialist, certified, or have a reputation as big as yours to protect .  Pay a third outside expert to assess your campaign before launch.

If you have ever waited in line at the DMV, this audio skit should bring a smile.

I've long enjoyed Dan's thoughts on online marketing.  Here he shares five myths on landing page optimization.  Interesting comment about the long page: It works, but it has a stigma that some might not want associated with a business.   Good read.

8 Horrible Data Visualizations

The rush to create clever infographics has some casualties.  A rule I recommend: If your mom or another relative can't make sense of your graphic, then it's time to go back to the drawing board.

Data visualization can be a great way to drive numbers home and give them a visual weight mere statistics don't have. At least, that's what happens when they make sense. Sometimes visualizations are downright dumb and just make things worse. Like these, for instance.

As a fan of Tufte in general and the famous Napoleonic March infographic in particular, I'm tired of "infographics" that are simply stylized pie charts. If the presentation doesn't transcend bar graphs and elevate and illuminate the data source, it's just not an infographic. My .02.

Did you peek before hiring?  Will it get uncovered later?

Noticed this article through a FB post from +Bryan Eisenberg

http://ondeviceresearch.com/blog/facebook-costing-16-34s-jobs-in-tough-economic-climate#sthash.l3vXp25B.dpbs

The elephant in the room is that pre-employment social media background checks expose employers to a raft of liabilities -- both immediate and dormant.

The liability goes beyond making a discriminatory decision based on a protected status.  It includes potential exposure if you didn't get written agreement to look in the first place.  (!)

Case law is still forming for this, but it looks to be strict.

What are your policies for pre-employment social media background checks?
One in ten young people have been rejected for a job because of their social media profile. These are the latest findings from our Young People’s Consumer Confidence (YPCC) Index, which is designed to help businesses understand what young people aged 16-34

I remember fighting with the Mountain View school system  about over-labeling ADHD.  I accused them of trying bring higher ada money to the school by labeling energetic kids as ADHD.  While there may have been some truth, I was, perhaps overzealous.

This article strikes me the same way.  Some important points, but uncomfortably certain.  What do you think?

Nice checklist from Market Motive faculty and bestselling author Bryan Eisenberg.  Love the bonus item at the end of the list.  I'd add "Check your error logs".  What would you add?

Bragging rights
I'm still a passable programmer (Perl, PHP) having learned Fortran on punch cards at UCSC in the late 70's, can recite Pi past 11 digits, and somehow still remember the resistor color codes
