We were considering using Shopify for in-house sales as well as online sales. Currently we use PayPal to process payments. We were interested in using Shopify for processing both online and in-store payments because of the potential for consolidated inventory tracking for both the online and the physical store. The two issues we faced when considering moving from PayPal to Shopify for in-store sales are the inability to email automatically generated daily sales reports and the 30-cent transaction fee. The transaction fee is the more serious problem. Our least expensive item is $7; a 30-cent fee for this item would correspond to an effective credit card rate of 7.16%.

PayPal also charges a 30-cent fee for online transactions, but not for in-person transactions (https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/merchant-fees) - unfortunately PayPal uses third parties such as Shopify for online stores. Square charges 2.75% (https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/5068-fees-and-pricing) without any additional transaction fees, they offer free online stores (https://squareup.com/), and their hardware requirements are compatible with our current receipt printer, cash drawer, etc. Amazon Local Register charges 2.5% (http://localregister.amazon.com/) with no additional fees, and their online store is also a strong contender (http://services.amazon.com/content/sell-on-amazon.htm?ld=AOUSSOA-alrsoa). Of these alternatives, Square is the one most highly recommended by our fellow shopkeepers here in Half Moon Bay, CA.

We are going to move our online and in-person business over to Square.

We've been using PayPal Here with iPads to process transactions in our art store & gift shop (Colors of the Coast). Until today, this worked pretty well. Our sales clerks signed in, they processed all types of cards and cash, printed receipts, etc.

Until today. A new update arrived on our iPads without warning, and it removed important functionality, changed how login worked, and no longer processes transactions. I was on the phone to tech support for an hour, and we still cannot process transactions. Seems there is no way to roll back to the previous version of PayPal Here.

This is death for a retail merchant. We rely on our transaction processor for our financial well-being. It is irresponsible of PayPal to inflict breaking changes on customers without warning. Total sales today: $0.

PayPal, you only get to fuck us over once. Goodbye. We're switching to a competitor today.
