Correlated Magnetics Polymaget - designed and printed magnets

You've probably never seen magnets like these.

Correlated Magnetics is a company that has come up with a way to "print" magnets they call polymagnets, with a very intricate distribution of north and south poles.

Very strong magnets can be created by placing many north and south poles on the same face. Normally, magnets have a north pole on one side and south on the other, with the field going around the magnet. Placing many north and south poles on the same surface, creates many small magnetic fields which in total, create a much stronger magnet.

The precise distribution of north and south poles allows the creation of magnets that have characteristics that you might not have thought possible. Such as a magnet that attracts at one distance and repels at another.

The Star Trek Axanar fan film may be back on.
At last night’s Star Trek fan event, the latest trailer for Star Trek Beyond wasn’t the only newsworthy event: J.J. Abrams announced that Paramount Pictures’ lawsuit against Axanar Productions was “going away.”

Forcing password changes doesn't necessarily make things more secure.

A point I've made for years. But, no-one's listened yet.
Forcing users to think up new passwords too often could make you less secure, not more.

Arduino Smart Thermostat

I saw this on the +Arduino page on Facebook. They don't seem to have posted it here yet. So, here it is...

I think it would be great if many consumer electronics that needed a brain, were based on something fairly generic like Arduino or even Raspberry Pi.  But, a search of the internet will find projects for thermostats, irrigation controllers, security systems, and various other home automation ideas based on these inexpensive devices.  So, there's plenty of information available to help you build your own.

Before she was Gaga.

I never would have recognized her. I've not really followed her closely.  When the Barnes and Noble commercial ran at Christmas, I didn't know that was her at first with Tony Bennett. When she made the news, she was generally dressed very unusually. So, I'm probably not good at recognizing her anyway.

This video made the rounds a while back, a live performance she did at NYU before she was Lady Gaga. She's fabulously talented, and pretty thoroughly classically trained in music. I've always told people that she didn't wind up where she is by accident -- she did it by being very smart, and very well versed in pop culture, and by very consciously building an entire persona that is really itself a single cohesive piece of art.

Ode to Mothers

This was actually on Amazon for use as an eGift card. Posting it from there was sort of messy. But, it originates from American Greetings and they will at least let you watch it.

Texas Flooding 4/18/2016.

I think most of the rain hit Texas late Sunday night and early Monday morning. But, it was torrential. Large areas of Houston experienced flooding. The rain amounts since Monday morning have been significantly less, but areas to the west, northwest, north, and northeast, were still experiencing issues with rising water earlier today (Wednesday).

Here is some drone footage posted on KPRC http://click2houston.com in Houston.

The first link below is the same as the link in the graphic.

I was watching some news crews out looking things over earlier today. They were in a boat on what looked like a lake. Then, you see the boat pass under stoplights. So, no, not a lake. A flooded street.

Led Zeppelin copyright case.

A court is about to decide if Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" copied form Spirit's "Taurus".

I've never heard of the band, Spirit. I listened to the YouTube post of their song, "Taurus",  at the link and my first impression was, uh oh. Then, I listened to "Stairway to Heaven". I liked "Taurus". I've never heard it before. It's abnormally short while "Stairway to Heaven" is abnormally long. There is that sequence in both that is so unmistakably similar. But, there's so much more to "Stairway to Heaven".

I seriously doubt that Led Zeppelin intentionally copied the song. But, it would certainly be easy to hear something, not even be aware that you heard it, and then have it influence you later.

And, then there are guitarists that say that the downward chord progression is not uncommon, particularly with a guitar.

So, who knows?
A U.S. jury will decide whether the opening section of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" was lifted from a lesser-known U.S. band.

What a successful week for Elon Musk! First he raises $325,000,000.00+ from customers for a new Tesla car which will not be built until beginning in 2017 and some will not get their cars until 2019 or later. And his SpaceX Falcon 9 successfully lands. I am very happy for him and feel that he is becoming what NASA and Automobile companies should be. Outstanding!

Surgery for a lab who was hit by a car.

Late last year, this gentlemen saw this poor dog on the side of the road after being hit by a car. He picked him up, took him to the vet, and nursed him back to health. But, he didn't quite meet his donation goal to cover the medical expenses and hasn't found an adopter yet. And, to make matters worse, Labby is injured again and needs to see the vet.
