LED Closet Light

I wanted to replace some of our closet lights. I haven't been enthused by the look of most closet lights and was actually thinking of replacing this one and another like it, with a recessed can. I've been thinking about that for awhile, but the project has never bubbled up to a level of importance to be started.

When I'm in Home Depot, I occasionally check in on what the LED lights are looking like. I walked by this one that is designed to just screw in flush on an old style ceiling mount socket. The kind often used in closets. It was $20.00 and is advertised as a 60 watt incandescent equivalent. It actually seems a little brighter than 60 watts. The box says bright white and 830 lumens. So it should be pretty equivalent to 60 watts. Because it is LED, it uses only 11.5 watts.

The light comes with a socket and mounting plate, just in case you don't have a screw in socket and actually have an electrical box to mount to.

The one negative about these custom designed LED lights, is that their lighting elements are not standard customer replaceable parts. So, when it breaks, the whole unit will likely have to be replaced. It's rated at 50,000 hours, so that shouldn't be for a very long time though.

Kickstarter - 3D Smartphone Photography

Another interesting Kickstarter.  An attachment to a smartphone, via the headphone jack, to capture a 3D photograph.  The cost is $49 + shipping.
Matter And Form Inc. is raising funds for Bevel - 3D Photography for any Smartphone or Tablet on Kickstarter! The world's first attachment that captures genuine 3D photographs

Magnetic USB Adapter.

This is a really interesting #Kickstarter  project. An adapter that converts a micro USB or Apple Lightening connector to a reversible magnetic connector. It may not be appropriate for all uses since it probably breaks away too easily to use with a car charger and such. But, for charging on the night stand or something similar, it would be pretty nice.

Of course wireless charging is nice too.  I just don't like wireless charging, mainly because it heats everything up too much which causes the battery to deteriorate faster.

The cost is really reasonable. I'm just not sure how they are going to avoid being taken to court by somebody for some patent issue.

ZNAPS Brings Reversible Magnetic Chargers to Any Phone - One of the most tangible benefits of the upcoming USB Type-C connection standard is the fact that it is reversible, meaning that it doesn’t matter which way up the connector is when you plug it in. iPhone users have had this functionality since Apple’s proprietary Lightning adapter was introduced back in 2012, and it’s something that many users in the Android camp envy. Unfortunately, USB Type-C won’t begin to arrive on phones until l...

Waiting for portal approvals.

I had a bunch of portal responses, approvals and rejections, between 5/12 and 5/14. Those were mostly about 6 months old with a few a little older.  That was also about the time that they last changed the portal acceptance criteria.  My longest outstanding portal is now 10 months.  The last portal response I had was 5/28.Since then, it's gone dark.

I'm sure some have seen worse and some better.  Those are just my stats.

I'm not really terribly bothered by it any more.  It is what it is.  I just really wanted to use this GIF. :)

I had two approved in four minutes. Others are still waiting after four months.

Star Trek: Axanar

This is a pretty heavily financed Star Trek fan film. They've already completed a Kickstarter project. The Indiegogo project is still open.

Prelude to Axanar is already available: https://youtu.be/1W1_8IV8uhA
The Prelude looks really good.

Majority Illusion and the Tech Press treatment of G+

This eWEEK article is primarily about how the tech press mischaracterizes the popularilty of #Googleplus  . But, the more interesting part to me, because I don't much care what the tech press says, is about some research from the University of Southern California regarding a phenomenon they called "majority illusion" .

"When a person sees a behavior or attribute among many of their friends, they're likely to be deluded into thinking that it can be extended to the network as a whole, even though it's actually rare."

This is certainly a behavior that I've noticed, although I was never able to describe it so clearly.

Kickstarter - Android PC

I'm really trying hard to resist backing this one since I really don't have anything to use this for.  $20 to $40 for an Android device set up to use like a PC with a keyboard, display and mouse.
Jide Tech is raising funds for Remix Mini - The World's First True Android PC. on Kickstarter! Remix Mini is a tiny PC. It gives you a PC experience unlike anything on Android and an Android experience unlike anything on a PC.

Apparently Google and Delphi didn't have an incident.

Remember the reports a week ago from someone at Delphi saying that a Google Autonomous Car cut off Delphi's robot car and implied they had a near miss?  Apparently, not so much.  I thought the story sounded just a bit embellished.  Both companies acknowledge they were in sight of each other and that both cars acted as they should have.
