Google+ Hangouts for iOS: phone calls, animated GIFs, and more

Today we're updating Google+ Hangouts for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The new app includes the recent Android improvements (http://goo.gl/gd3By1), as well as some new goodies for iOS:

- You can now make calls to phones from the iOS app, and calls to the US and Canada are free! You can dial internationally too (with super low rates), but you'll first need some calling credit: google.com/voice/m/credit.

- If you're a Google Voice user, you can make and receive calls from any of your iOS devices with today's update. Outgoing calls will come from your Google Voice number, and incoming Voice calls can be answered from Google+ Hangouts.

- Incoming messages will no longer stop your music. Instead of interrupting your groove, Google+ Hangouts will now temporarily duck your music, then crank the volume back up.

- Aaand… animated GIFs will now play in-line.

Today's release contains lots of features based on your feedback (seeing who's reachable right now, early integrations with Google Voice), but we're always working to make the app better. So give the new version a go (http://goo.gl/FDOfq), and let us know your thoughts!

My Town...in the Winter

I was cheering the runners on at the 2013 Austin Livestrong Marathon and took a quick break to take a picture of our river which cuts right down through the town.  It was early in the morning and a bit chilly.  Congrats to all of the finishers.

Administrative  -

I created a new "Administrative" category for this forum.

If you'd like have a new section of the forum or another structural change, please post it here.

If you see some content that was spam or any other abuse please post it here and it can be addressed.

Also, if anyone is active with this community and interested in being a moderator please post a comment and I'll private message you.  There isn't much to it, but posts that Google+ thinks are spam get held back and have to be manually approved.  By far the majority of the posts are fine.  Every now and then some come through that are spam or off topic and you have to review them and then decide to keep them hidden or approve.

And any other "community board" administrative issues would go here too.  Thanks everyone!

Thanks Michael, I'll let you know, but it seems straight forward enough (love how easy Google makes it).

Thanks for the link too.

Anyone have an experience with the Garmin Forerunner® 910XT?  I'm still plugging away with my second Forerunner 305, which I've really liked; apart from the short battery life.  I'm not ready to upgrade, but when this one dies I'm considering this newer one.

I'm a Suunto Ambit or Ambit2s fan.
It is a watch designed for the outdoor adventurer.
Harmon's are nice, I just prefer Suunto.

Work Trip....But can I get Wales v England Rugby tickets for Next Week's Match???

Glad to be headed back to the UK, and the West in particular.  I've been working there on and off over the last few years.  I'm hoping to make it down to Exmoor National Park in my downtime.  But hopefully I can snag some tickets in Cardiff for Millennium Stadium.  Either way I'll have a fantastic trip.

I also downloaded a Banksy Tour app for Bristol, which I'll be staying at later.  I've seen several of his works while walking around town, but never tried to track them all down.  Should be a fun excuse to walk around again.

Introduction
Michael A. Romig

I am a local to Austin, Texas, USA.

Please feel free to add me to any circles you have that include the following

I might have already added you!

Professionally I facilitate the adoption of emerging and advanced technologies, both software and hardware, around the world.  That means I work on very new technology and help install and test it with various user communities in sometimes very remote places.

Avocationally I enjoy a variety of outdoor activities:   trail running, hiking, backpacking, stunts, inline skating, snow skiing, PSIA, AASI, scuba diving and snorkeling and kicking a soccer ball around.

But I also enjoy reading literature and watching great films, amateur photography, writing, martial arts (specifically Bujinkan) and travel.

I read a lot of tech news sites such as Slashdot and Reddit.

AkooTV: Ferris Bueller
www.youtube.com

One of AkooTV's very talented (and sleep-deprived) editors had some fun with the new Ferris Bueller Honda ad playing during the Super Bowl.

I went in for an annual inspection and it was failed, specifically for the parking break not performing to the standard. It seemed really dodgy, a break place failing a break check and he seemed evasive when I asked about it further, so I wanted to check it for myself. I simulated the test and it looked compliant to me. I called back and the mechanic claimed he was applying a 1000 rpm check standard. I checked the state regulations http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/InternetForms/Forms/VI-87.pdf and there is no RPM standard for this check, a 1000+ rpm check is much higher than the law prescribes. I called back because my tests clearly passed according to the regulations, as stated. What is unfortunate here is that when I called back it appeared to me the store manager very quickly got defensive and aggressive. It seemed a very unprofessional response. He threatened that if I brought it back and it wasn't "repaired" I'd have to pay again. Clearly he was not listening and ignored my concerns. I could take it back there and argue the points as they are not enforcing the TXDPS standards for which they have been charged. But for the relatively inexpensive cost of an inspection I will go to another facility where the people are professional and willing to discuss concerns without blowing up. I absolutely do not recommend this business and will not be returning.
