I love the New Year. I think that love started because of the fireworks. Where I grew up we would watch the fireworks to celebrate the coming of the New Year. When I was old enough I would save my money for weeks ahead of time to purchase firecrackers and jumping jack fireworks to shoot off on my own. This year I continued the tradition.

Although some years have passed I still feel the same excitement I did in my youth seeing the golden, silver, and red sparks spraying up in to the dark skies. I smile as I lay down to sleep hearing my neighbors continuing to shoot off their delights well into the night. I can tell they love the holiday too.

Happy New Year everyone. I hope 2017 is a most amazing year for you.

Was watching the Rio Olympic Games opening ceremonies, but Stranger Things was calling me on Netflix. Netflix won. It will be nice when the entire Olympic Games primarily streams online with video on demand after individual events. Maybe Netflix or Hulu can win the contract to broadcast sometime and show us how it could be done. That would rock.

But what does it all mean?

Anyone come across some really good roadmap or architecture talks about Google+'s future?

Had a great visit to Dubai this week. Amazing city. Met good folks at work. Saw a few parts of town I hadn't spent time in before. This photo is from last night walking around the old Spice Souk.

Google+ Hangouts for iOS: phone calls, animated GIFs, and more

Today we're updating Google+ Hangouts for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The new app includes the recent Android improvements (http://goo.gl/gd3By1), as well as some new goodies for iOS:

- You can now make calls to phones from the iOS app, and calls to the US and Canada are free! You can dial internationally too (with super low rates), but you'll first need some calling credit: google.com/voice/m/credit.

- If you're a Google Voice user, you can make and receive calls from any of your iOS devices with today's update. Outgoing calls will come from your Google Voice number, and incoming Voice calls can be answered from Google+ Hangouts.

- Incoming messages will no longer stop your music. Instead of interrupting your groove, Google+ Hangouts will now temporarily duck your music, then crank the volume back up.

- Aaand… animated GIFs will now play in-line.

Today's release contains lots of features based on your feedback (seeing who's reachable right now, early integrations with Google Voice), but we're always working to make the app better. So give the new version a go (http://goo.gl/FDOfq), and let us know your thoughts!

I created a new "Administrative" category for this forum.

If you'd like have a new section of the forum or another structural change, please post it here.

If you see some content that was spam or any other abuse please post it here and it can be addressed.

Also, if anyone is active with this community and interested in being a moderator please post a comment and I'll private message you.  There isn't much to it, but posts that Google+ thinks are spam get held back and have to be manually approved.  By far the majority of the posts are fine.  Every now and then some come through that are spam or off topic and you have to review them and then decide to keep them hidden or approve.

And any other "community board" administrative issues would go here too.  Thanks everyone!
