So, self promotion news, but also something unbelievable. I just released a new book (linked). While designing the cover, I wanted a cool Celtic knot to add. I searched around DeviantArt, found one I liked, and emailed the artist for permission to use it. She was cool, and said I could do it for free.

Publishing day comes, and I noticed that on her site, the artist mentions she lives in NC. Cool. So do I. Then I noticed she serves on a board for some cool artisty thing for the Triangle (in NC, that's the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area). I live in the Triangle, so I sent her a little email saying "Hi from a fellow RDU person, and thanks again for letting me use the knot."

A few minutes later, I get an IM on my work's internal message system. The artist's husband totally works at my company. Like, I could stand up in my cubicle, shout his name, and he would answer (and other people would be annoyed).

1. Small world.
2. Awesome (positive) illustration of why you always ask for permission and/or pay to use someone else's stuff, rather than being a dick and just taking it.
3. My mind is officially blown.

Also, buy the book. It's free if you're an Amazon Prime member, and it includes the previous 4 entries in the series. It's not half bad.
