That would be terrible if the cron job running on App Engine that needs this file to work is bad :/

The best data posts of the week. Send me your picks!

This week, it’s all about the practical applications of data technologies. Big (Bad) Data by Andrew Ross Sorkin Great article – just because one thinks they see a trend from a large amount of data, it doesn’t mean there’s automatically a correct, or even…

This reminds me of +Felipe Hoffa  's talk at the last Strata Conf
The Royal Society is urging people to help it shine a light on the achievements of women in science in a forthcoming 'edit-athon' Jonathan Jones on art: is Wikipedia the best place to promote women in art?

Americans get riled up about creationists and climate change deniers, but lap up the quasi-religious snake oil at Whole Foods.

Getting ready for I/O 2014? Check the story of Google I/O 2013, as seen through Tableau and Google #BigQuery
Here's an overview of readings in Moscone Convention Center's 3 floors during the event: And here's the profile of sound (mic) throughout the conference. The big peak is during the Billy Joel concert:

NBA official: The No. 98 Brooklyn Nets uniform of Jason Collins -- the first openly gay player in the four major U.S. sports -- is the top-seller on NBA.com.

It's widely accepted that there are two types of people in the world - those that want an introduction to writing MapReduce jobs in Python for Hadoop, and those who enjoy watching me type on the command line. Finally, a video for everyone.

See BigQuery, Python, +Wes McKinney's pandas, and R working together for data science, with my best friends from Pearson.

Thanks +Collin Sellman - director of data science, +Jacob Schaer,  and +Sean Schaefer!

Technical note: Since version 0.13, pandas officially supports #BigQuery : http://pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/stable/io.html#io-bigquery

Story
Introduction
I'm a technologist, traveler, optimist and information addict. I currently work for Google as a Developer Programs Engineer, working with Apps and Cloud APIs. I've spent a big chunk of my career working on Internet media projects for non-profit organizations. I've also written for tech blog ProgrammableWeb.com, spent time in rural Uganda researching mobile phone use, and somehow found the time to complete a Masters degree in Information Management and Systems from UC Berkeley's School of Information.
Education
  • UC Berkeley School of Information
    Information Management and Systems, 2008 - 2010
  • UC Berkeley, College of Natural Resources
    Genetics and Plant Biology, 1993 - 1997

If you want to get stronger, lose weight, and get results then I definitely, definitely recommend training with Milli. In fact, I can honestly say that Milli has gotten me in the best shape I have been in decades. She will really make you work, and will make you laugh your ass off while you are getting your butt kicked by the excellent workout. Check out the Yelp pictures - see the guy in the grey tshirt? Yes, that's actually me - I lost nearly 20 pounds and got much stronger after training with Milli for just a few months. Not only do I look better, but my daily life is way more active. Example: on BART, I no longer take the escalator... I carry my bike up the stairs, and I'm not winded when I get to the top. Here's what happened with me - when I met Milli, she spent time to ask me what I wanted to get out of my workout, she helped me set realistic goals, and put together a plan for me. I travel a lot, so she also taught me many exercises that I could do if I don't have a weight set. You will learn a lot of cool strength techniques when you work out with Milli. There's lots to love about Milli's fitness techniques, but for me the best part is that she emphasizes strength training that is actually functional. What this meant for me: lots of core training, and lots of strength training for muscles that you use for activities in your daily life. Lifting your bike. Lifting your kids. Balancing on a surfboard. Amazing your friends by carrying multiple heavy boxes when you help them move. Carrying your significant other across the threshold, etc. If you are looking at trainers, I'll say one more thing that I think sets Milli apart: There's always a lot of variety in the workouts. Some days we might do lots of weight training, using sandbells or kettlebells, some days it's battle ropes and american ninja warrior style stuff, and other times we do stuff is almost parkour. Conclusion: Milli will put you through tough, but super fun workouts, I got a lot stronger fast, you will get results, and you will have a great time.
