Jesse, thank you for sharing these valuable insights. Sadly too many "experts" out there are advocating the myths. Especially when it comes to short copy vs. long, pop-ups and the ever popular 2-3 click rule. Appreciate that you took the time to write up this piece.

I agree. However, in my experience the people that blindly follow expert advice and end up being disappointed are those, that choose not to pay what true expert advice costs and end up paying someone for general best practice tips.

Best practice tips and true expert advice are not the same. If you don't know where to start your CRO then I actually think that best practice is just as good a place to start testing as your own hunch. But if you or an expert do have a good idea/hypothesis of what is wrong, then that is what should be tested.

The thing that many CRO consultants tend to forget, is that unless you are testing headlines, it almost always involves some kind of redesign. A redesign often involves a minimum of three people: Yourself and/or the expert with the hypothesis, a designer and a frontender to implement the changes.
If you are extremely lucky, they are all in-house resources and you only have to book time to use these persons as resources. However, the most typical situation is, that one or more of these resources are external and need to be paid for this. The more design iterations and the more testing you need, the more resources it requires.

Using an expert will get you the optimization faster... and faster in this case very often means better yelding results and less design iterations. That way the costs of hiring an experienced CRO expert is covered by what you save on the optimization proces.

So when a CRO consultant sells best practice tips so the client can do his own testing, they often neglect to point out the costs involved in testing.

My point being that testing using an experienced CRO expert is often cheaper in the grand total than testing your own hunch or testing best practice tips because a test often requires more than your own time.

Found another misleading survey. Check this one out; claiming that #socialmedia  is the top dog  (in terms of ROMI) for #B2B leadgeneration. Sure this particular survey also says that social media is bad for attracting quality leads, but still. 

I wonder; when will people stop op and use commonsense before passing on the myriads of misleading infographics and survey results that we are exposed to every single day.
