The ice in the Columbia River Gorge made the waterfalls exceptionally pretty this weekend.

Spent the day up at Mount St. Helens hiking the Harmony Falls trail and the trail up to Norway Pass. Couldn't ask for lovelier weather.

This piece done by Oregon Field Guide is an excellent, brief summary of some of the volcanic hazards and history of Mount Hood. It also features geologist Willie Scott, which whom I had the pleasure of hiking into the crater of Mount St. Helens a few summers ago.
It's well worth 8 minutes of your time, and details some of the issues I wrote about in this post back in 2011: http://cascadiablog.com/2011/09/24/im-not-just-going-to-show-you-all-my-faults/

Prospects are looking good for a mostly sunny Saturday on Mount Hood this coming weekend. If that holds true, I'll be doing a snowshoe along the White River. If it's cloudy & snowing, I may pick a forested hike. Maybe Frog Lake? Anyone got any suggestions?

I love the Newton/Clark Creeks walk, especially if you can get up towards Elk Meadows.

Got bored this morning and made a little Oregon photo set from some of the pictures I've taken over the last few years.

I can't really supply you with GPS coordinates, but all of these places are prominent tourist & hiking spots. Here's a list as pictured from top to bottom & left to right:

North side of Mount Hood, a rainbow just outside of Ochoco National Forest, Crater Lake, Upper South Falls at Silver Falls State Park, Sheep Rock at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, South side of Mount Hood, Paulina Lake at Newberry National Volcanic Monument, Roads End State Park, Deschutes River Recreation Area, Wahclella Falls in the Columbia River Gorge.

Practicing my animated gif skillz with a video of the #RussianMeteor.
(Not very good at it yet. Hard to balance quality with file size.)

Nah, but it's got to stay under 1 mb to be uploaded to Tumblr, I think.

My companions weren't feeling too intrepid yesterday, so we just did Mirror Lake and a portion of Tom, Dick & Harry Mountain. It was so warm in the mountains, but when we got back to Portland the temps were still in the 30's and apparently had been all day.

Too bad. I wish they could work something out there. Then again, there used to be like 100 cars there on weekends, and that can't be safe.
