the diabetes treatment drug, metformin, may have beneficial effects related to health and lifespan not directly related to just the hypoglycemia-inducing effects for which it is normally prescribed
Metformin is a hypoglycemia-inducing drug of the biguanide family that has been used to treat the hyperglycemia associated with type 2 diabetes for over 50 years. Indeed, metformin is the most frequently prescribed diabetes t...

Eating the gut bacteria from a hlean healthy individual may indeed be the next big thing in the treatment/cure for obesity and type 2 diabetes
More and more research is demonstrating the beneficial roles played by the bacteria that reside within our intestines in the control, regulation, and modulation of normal physiological status and that disruption in the ratios...

more studies showing negative impact of maternal health status, such as obesity and diabetes, on offspring
I have posted several times here about the consequences of a mothers dietary intake and weight status on the future health of her unborn child. There are numerous reports in the literature that clearly point to the fact that ...

be careful what you eat!! even a calorie restricted diet with too many of the calories coming from fructose (from ANY source) can lead to metabolic disruption and disease
The amount of fructose in the typical American diet has increased dramatically in the past 20 years. This is due primarily to the increased use of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as a sweetener is processed foods and drinks, ...

exciting new research demonstrating a potentially new pharmacological target in the treatment of type 2 diabetes
Adipose tissue is much more than just the fat storage organ. Mature adipocytes synthesize and secrete numerous enzymes, growth factors, cytokines (referred to as adipokines) and hormones that are involved in overall whole bod...

new study showing the power of altering the composition of gut bacteria in the control of obesity and diabetes
The identification that the bacteria in our guts play critical roles in whole body metabolic and immune homeostasis has led to an explosion of scientific research in this field (intestinal microbiota) as well as to increased ...

Another recent report demonstrating the benefits of certain types of dietary fats in the control of appetite and feeding behaviors. This fatty acid amide (OEA) is synthesized in the gut from oleic acid which is a major lipid of extra-virgin olive oil. Another example of the health benefits of the "Mediterranean diet"
Until recently fats were considered mere sources of energy and as components of biological membranes. However, research over the past 10-15 years has demonstrated a widely diverse array of biological activities associated wit...

Love the rantings. Keep up the good work. I reckon Dr Oz should know not all extra virgins are the same. There are no Moroccan goats here, they eat everything including my washing so I can't vouch for argon oil. I am a drupe farmer [when I am not taming teenagers] in a beautiful, dry and windy valley on a riverbank vineyard, nestled amongst mountains and by the sea. I have come to know my olives from my elbow. The secret to a real healthy Extra virgin oil depends on  where they grow, the temperature at harvest and processing and how long the drupes are able to hang on the tree before dropping or being eaten inside out by bactrocera daculus. "Michael adduct formation by arylating quinone electrophile". I have an interest in arylating desmethyl tocopherols from seed oils and teen behaviour after eating fast foods. I have become very familiar with "oxidative stress".
Plant Polyphenols are a response to diurnial stress. They are great natural pesticides too as I am sure you know. A real extra virgin should not be grown with lipophilic cocktails of penetrants, organophosphates and fungicides with easy penetration of fruit waxes  as they can mess up an endocrine system faster than you can say Jack Robinson. Yeast overgrowth becomes a problem and the teen... oops tree  stops using its own natural defence system when its propped up artificially. You could check out ALL the identified extra virgin polyphenols and TRPV1.I would like to know what you think. You write so succinctly it is a pleasure to read your work. A lifetime teaching  special needs xxxl Polynesian autistic/epileptic/obese or anorexic or just plain depressed  teens way downunder teaches a gal a lot about satiety. I love oily bitter unrefined drupes and very oily fish. Makes a day in my class peaceful. Having a 92 year old molecular biologist for a Ma determined to stay mentally alert is so helpful too. "Eat your broccoli" is her catch cry. She is known as The Cruciferous Crusader with the t shirt to prove it. We are beta amyloid plaque removers in very large Kiore in our spare time.

new studies demonstrate potential for use of multiple "drugs" simultaneously in the battle against obesity
Several hormones and bioactive peptides are secreted from specialized cells within the gastrointestinal tract. The stomach and small intestines are the major sites for the secretion of these proteins. Several of these factors...

bacteria in the gut are critically important in the regulation of whole body homeostasis, more data to support this statement
The bacteria (microbiota) that reside in our intestines were once thought to be of little consequence except for their role in vitamin synthesis. However, very recently a new area of study has begun to focus on the role of th...
