1 Peter 2:1-2 "Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:"
One of the most pitiful sight that there is to behold is that of the undeveloped. Dwarfed plants and the dwarfed child of God. Hebrews 5:12 "For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat." We will lament the physically underdevelopment of a person but, we lightly make excuses for and will even overlook the spiritual. Those who do this seem to have forgotten the physical being will be no more one day. The spiritual being lives forever. What is even worse is that we have everything to say about where our eternal home will be. Some falsely believe that they can grow before birth. Meaning they want to test and see if they can live the Christian life before obeying the Gospel. No one has been able to do that yet and even if they could what difference would it make when obeying the Gospel is the only way to get into Heaven. All Christian living is in Christ Jesus. Acts 17:28 "For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring." We can only enter into Christ through obedience. Romans 6:3-8 "Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:" Galatians 3:26-27 "For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." There are things that are essential to growth both physical and MOST importantly spiritual.
The number one thing logically is food. Jesus has our spiritual food. John 4:32-34 "But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work." It is essential that we have this spiritual food. John 6:53-54 "Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day." Jesus is the Heavenly Bread John 6:51 " I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." We dwell in God if we eat His flesh. John 6:55-56 "For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him." Growth physical or spiritual is dependent on food. 1 Peter 2:2 "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:" It enables us to discern. Hebrews 5:12-14 "For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil." Yes it is the Word of God that supplies us this spiritual food. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."
Food alone will not be enough there is also much care involved. All members of the Body of the Christ should have the same care. Ephesians 4:3-6 "Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." This is part of what makes it easy to see a false teacher. There are NO FALSE TEACHINGS in Scripture. Therefore if what they are saying and or doing cannot be found in the Scriptures they are FALSE TEACHERS. Avoid them like the plague. Because they are a plague. They are of the devil and not of God. Even if they were once faithful, even the faithful can fall. The only safe ground is in the Scriptures. It is only the true Christian the faithful that can influence the world through care. Matthew 5:13-16 " Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." The church also has its place in this care. Hebrews 10:25 "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."
Finally it takes exercise. 1 Timothy 4:8 "For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come." In this self-centered, selfish, shallow and ego driven culture we live in today, people spend tens of thousands of dollars on supplements and exercise going to the gym, desperately trying to attain that perfect body. A body that will one day be placed in the ground and will rot away like every other corpse. If they spent half the time and money just studying their Bibles imagine the spiritual body they would have. There is a dramatic change that takes place in less than a year of going to the gym faithfully working out. It is the same but more dramatic the change that takes place in the life faithfully dedicated to studying the Bible just one hour a day. Anyone that says they do not have one hour to study or just read their Bible is lying. Colossians 3:23 "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;"
The result of this growth is HAPPINESS. Romans 14:22-23 "Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin." In this spiritual growth you will not only save yourself but you will also enjoy one of the greatest pleasures I have ever known. Bringing others to the Christ. 1 Timothy 4:11-16 "These things command and teach. Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee."
