A curious tale of product names across cultures. In the early days of video servers the dominant product was the "Profile" made by Grass Valley Group. The name Profile became synonymous with video server...like Xerox for photocopiers.

Sony later created a new robotic video archival system, pictured here. It was notable for being one of the first hardware systems capable of a petabyte of near-line storage.

Seeking to leverage the industry standard vernacular, they started out calling their new archival system....The Petafile!

Of course, that didn't sit well with the North American market, and the product was renamed the PetaSite.
