A few years back desktop search was all the rage. There was Beagle, which looked cool but I never ran it, seems to be dead now. Then there was tracker, now MetaTracker (?), which I think was installed in Ubuntu for a while but ate all my disk bandwidth so I turned it off.

Now that I have a shiny new laptop with an SSD, and even more data, I'd like to have a good way to search it all. I think one of the things that increasingly draws me to put more data online ("in the cloud") is the superior searchability many web apps give you.

So does anyone run one of the desktop search tools? And if so would you recommend it :-)

Thanks for your insight. Sounds like Gnome 3.4 will include tracker, so that's probably the way to go.
