Vortex Games   You've got to watch dolphins playing with vortices of air starting at 0:31, and then beluga whales... and then big hump-back whales.    I might have thought the dolphin videos were fake if I hadn't done some research.  Apparently a dolphin at Seaworld began shooting vortices of air out its blowhole, and then others learned how and started doing more and more clever tricks.  They're intelligent and bored - amazing things are possible!  I especially like it when they bite a vortex.

Thanks to +Oliver Thewalt!

An unexpected endorsement from Joss Whedon. Essential viewing for election week.

Yesterday I sailed near l'Hydroptère, the world's fastest sailboat, while it was moored near Tiburon.  The tail-like thing at the back folds down and becomes one of the hydrofoils.  Under sail it rises up off all three hulls and can hit over 60 mph.  This is the 5th design iteration in over 26 years.  l'Hydroptère : une vidéo et 25 années d'aventures

I got my #ingress invitation on the same day XKCD referenced it.

A nice long comic about the ups and downs of making things for the web.

This is, without a doubt, one of the most spectacularly eviscerating reviews that I have ever read.  Like all great literature, it transcends the genre.  This article, which begins as a restaurant review, arcs through snobbery, overbearing prosecutorial snark, slapstick comedy and ends with tragic befuddlement.

New York Times reviewer loses it over Guy Fieri's restaurant.

New York Times food critic Pete Wells pens an opinion about the new Times Square restaurant Guy’s American Kitchen & Bar in what can only be described as a meltdown.

The entire review is made up of questions leveled at Fieri himself. As in:

"Did you notice that the menu was an unreliable predictor of what actually came to the table?" Or: "What exactly about a small salad with four or five miniature croutons makes Guy’s Famous Big Bite Caesar (a) big (b) famous or (c) Guy’s, in any meaningful sense?"

Delicious.

I'm getting excited about going to see Einstein on the Beach in October in Berkeley.  As a warmup, here's something Philip Glass did for Sesame Street in 1979.

Won't need them–I've been waiting since the 70s to see this in performance.  However, it will be close to five hours long without intermission...
