Dig this  This missive from PG&E arrived in my inbox at 1:38AM, April 2. I wonder if they held it back a day?

I think we'll throw a block party.

April is National Safe Digging Month

We support National Safe Digging Month and encourage you to review the safety tips and best practices below to plan your next digging project.

Can you picture Bill Gates "down in the bowels" ?

Bill Gates on Mark Zuckerberg: "Mark Zuckerberg wants Facebook to be the next Facebook. Mark has the credibility to say, 'I'm going to spend $19 billion to buy something that has essentially no revenue model.' I think his aggressiveness is wise -- although the price is higher than I would have expected. It shows that user bases are extremely valuable. It's software; it can morph into a broad set of things -- once you're set up communicating with somebody, you're not just going to do text. You're going to do photos, you're going to share documents, you're going to play games together. [...]

"We're both Harvard dropouts, we both had strong, stubborn views of what software could do. I give him more credit for shaping the user interface of his product. He's more of a product manager than I was. I'm more of a coder, down in the bowels and the architecture, than he is. But, you know, that's not that major of a difference. I start with architecture, and Mark starts with products, and Steve Jobs started with aesthetics."

Windows 8: Another fine reason to switch to Linux.

I ordered a refurbished, years-old Lenovo T410 notebook with Win7 Pro pre-installed. Partly because I really don't want a touch-screen running Win8 on my notebook, and partly because newer notebook computers have criminally awful keyboards.

I'm probably going to boot straight into Linux and run Win7 (when necessary) under VirtualBox anyway, but I just had to chuckle a bit when reading this news item.

Of course, you're perfectly free to fall in love with Windows 8 and join the notebooks-are-really-big-smartphones-with-crappy-chiclet-keyboards crowd.  Just don't ask me to type anything on your laptop computer, or wipe my fingers across its display.

Big surprise.

Don't like those keyboards myself, but if I'm doing anything even semi-serious, I'll schlep along a real keyboard. This wireless does OK and is pretty compact: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/wireless-touch-keyboard-k400r Not to mention that I have two of them, but for any real work I prefer a full-sized keyboard.

Also a mouse.
