On the 30th of June 2015, I experienced my worst ever fall from a bicycle in my 69-years, when I fell at circa 30 mph and my right knee (the linchpin of my power stroke) took the brunt of the force.  Bleeding from more than one place due to superficial scrapes, cuts and gouges, I stood up and could tell that something painfully traumatic had just taken place with my knee.  The other injuries seemed trivial.  I rode the bike about one half mile to my home and locked it away in my storage shed for the last time in what I feared would be a long (at best) period of recovery and recuperation.  After bathing and coping as best I could with the worst pains since my high speed accident on a motorcycle at the age of 25 when a flying collision with small pine tree broke my left arm, I called my good friend, Paul Aaron, a doctor of Chiropractic, who is a very competent cyclist.  From Paul, I learned that he had experienced a similar serious injury, and much more significantly that he would begin treating me the very next day.  With an antique walking stick acquired in England, I hobbled into Paul’s office the next morning.   From Paul, I learned in very short order that my recovery and recuperation would need not only his treatment, but also that of Stephen Helton, an extraordinary Physical Therapist.  To my good fortune, both Dr. Aaron and Mr. Helton operate out of the Health Clinic of Hillsborough relatively close to my home.  After my first treatment with Dr. Aaron, aided and guided by his skillful adjustments as well as the herbal remedies he prescribed, I began what would be a long and steep road to recovery.  However, I detected distinct physical improvements with every treatment.  This progress settled my mind.  At first, I questioned myself, “Will I ever be able to walk without a walking stick or a walker, again?”  “Will I ever regain my normal gait, cadence and tempo - all of which had been thrown far off of my relatively athletic baseline?”  “Would I ever be able to ride a bicycle again?”  “Would I ever have the same level of energy?”  “The same balance?”  “The same strength?”   “The same stamina?”   “The same speed?”   At times, I did not know the answers to these questions.  At the appropriate time - I had healed enough from the agonizing pain in my knee - I began a course of physical therapy with Stephen Helton.  Swiftly, I realized how right Dr. Aaron had been about the need for a constellation of therapies to treat my condition sans surgery, sans MRIs, sans drugs.  Stephen Helton was deeply cognizant and sensitive to the source of my sufferings, and in the course of my treatment - I came to realize the brilliance of Steve’s dictum:  “Everything in the body is connected.”  For instance, I learned that the lower back is an anchoring point for many tendons and muscles that extend to my knee.  Over the course of my treatments with Stephen Helton - the pace of my recovery steadily gained momentum.  Two and a half months after my fall, I got back on my bike and rode over my usual course.  I was thrilled.  Everything was back to my baseline.  I was free to walk, to dance, to run, to ride again.  But, there is more.  I now felt even more confident, more eager to ride, and more certain that I can improve my physical capabilities - because of the many positive side-effects of the treatment I received from Paul and Steve.  I will be stronger and healthier and even more competent athletically at 70 than I have been at 69.  I recommend their services with no hesitation whatsoever.  PS.  On the day of my first bike ride in over ten weeks, I drove to Greensboro and met Bernie Sanders.
