Sundown
Provincetown, Massachusetts

One of my favorite lighthouses on Cape Cod is Race Point Light in Provincetown. It's tucked out of the way (involving a 1.5 mile hike) and remains one of the few lighthouses that you can rent by the day (with rooms in the keeper's house and whistle house). I drove down on Monday in hopes of catching a pre-storm sky over the lighthouse. It was alright allthough not the most colorful sky I've seen here. To cope with the huge brightness differences between sky and land, I took two photos and blended them in post-processing so as to bring out details in the lighthouse

Granite Coastline
Acadia National Park, Maine

Another photo from my latest visit to Acadia. This was taken at sunset along the coast near Bass Harbor Light in Trenton. When the sun shines on that pink granite, it sure lights up nicely!

Fronzen Puddle on Granite
Acadia National Park, Maine

I spent a few more days in Acadia this week, coping with rain, snow showers, and strong winds. This is from Friday morning at sunrise along Ocean Drive. All my forecasting applications consistently reported that there was very little chance of color on this particular morning, yet fabulous color appeared in the sky 15 minutes before sunrise. It makes me question the value of all those high-tech applications. I thought I was alone until I spotted a lone seagull sitting out the sunrise on the tip of the pink granite rock. Can you see it?

Boulders at Dawn
Acadia National Park, Maine

My search for dark skies once again took me up to Acadia National Park. And I was lucky to get a clear night while in the park. On Tuesday, I was out alone on the coast at 3:30am for a night shot, and decided to wait till sunrise before heading back to the hotel. I took this photo of Boulder Beach at dawn as the rising sun painted the horizon in pastel shades.

Arch Over Nubble
Cape Neddick, Maine

This was a “dark week”, meaning that the Milky Way can be seen and photographed again with no hindrance from the moon. Well, I spent the first two days of the week chasing the night sky along the coast of Maine. My first stop on Monday morning was Nubble Light (again). This time, I took a panorama of the Milky Way arching over Nubble Island. To produce the panorama, I took six vertical photos and later stiched them in software. The photos were taken around 4:30am on a very clear Monday morning.

Boulders to the Sky
Acadia National Park, Maine

I took this photo a few years ago in March (at 4am). You may know the place as Boulder Beach in Acadia — possibly the most photographed beach in the entire national park. And the bright star is Venus rising. Late February spells the beginning of Milky Way season, when photographers galore go out in the wee hours of morning to capture our spiral galaxy. This week is a “dark” week when the moon rises later in the day, permitting night buffs to get out of bed at ridiculous hours just to catch the galaxy against a moonless sky. Let the fun begin.

Point Judith Blues
Narragansett, Rhode Island

One more photo from my recent visit to Rhode Island. This is Point Judith Light in the “blue hour” (30 minutes after sunset). That lighthouse has a very strong fresnel, so I sought to capture its playful reflection upon the surf. As I was taking this photo, I noticed 3-4 deer grazing around the base of the tower, apparently unfazed by the brilliant light.

Head in the Fog
Jamestown, Rhode Island

The coast was socked in yesterday. Since I was already in Rhode Island, I decided to photograph the Claiborne Pell Bridge in the fog (also known as the Newport Bridge) from the Jamestown side. The Claiborne Pell Bridge is the suspension bridge that connects Newport on Aquidneck Island and Jamestown on Conanicut Island. The fog was quite heavy after sunrise, but I was able to take this long exposure as the sun rose above the fog.

Come Alive
New Castle, New Hampshire

I drove over to the coast this morning and the sky was ablaze with color. It happens every once in a while, and it causes us photographers to turn giddy with excitement. This was taken at Great Island Common in New Castle. There are a lot of elements in this scene. To the far left is the Wood Island Life Saving Station, to the left of the tree is Whaleback Lighthouse, and if you have perfect eyesight, the profile of the Isles of Shoals is visible to the right of the tree. The best light was just before sunrise.

Sunset on the Farm
Reading, Vermont

Jenne Farm is one of the most iconic places in all of Vermont. It has been photographed countless times but we just keep coming back (always looking for better conditions)! The farm is usually photographed at sunrise when first light hits the side of the red barns, but I chose a contrarian path and came to photograph the place at sunset. It was still snowing lightly when I arrived at the farm (Friday morning), so the snow was pristine. And the clearing sky was not overly dramatic but nevertheless colorful, with yellows intermixed with some magenta hues.

Backlit scenes like this are more challenging to expose properly because of the wide range in light tones between the sky and land. So, I took one exposure for the sky, another for the foreground, and then blended the two to yield a photo having more balanced tones.
