Head in the Fog
Jamestown, Rhode Island

The coast was socked in yesterday. Since I was already in Rhode Island, I decided to photograph the Claiborne Pell Bridge in the fog (also known as the Newport Bridge) from the Jamestown side. The Claiborne Pell Bridge is the suspension bridge that connects Newport on Aquidneck Island and Jamestown on Conanicut Island. The fog was quite heavy after sunrise, but I was able to take this long exposure as the sun rose above the fog.

Come Alive
New Castle, New Hampshire

I drove over to the coast this morning and the sky was ablaze with color. It happens every once in a while, and it causes us photographers to turn giddy with excitement. This was taken at Great Island Common in New Castle. There are a lot of elements in this scene. To the far left is the Wood Island Life Saving Station, to the left of the tree is Whaleback Lighthouse, and if you have perfect eyesight, the profile of the Isles of Shoals is visible to the right of the tree. The best light was just before sunrise.

Sunset on the Farm
Reading, Vermont

Jenne Farm is one of the most iconic places in all of Vermont. It has been photographed countless times but we just keep coming back (always looking for better conditions)! The farm is usually photographed at sunrise when first light hits the side of the red barns, but I chose a contrarian path and came to photograph the place at sunset. It was still snowing lightly when I arrived at the farm (Friday morning), so the snow was pristine. And the clearing sky was not overly dramatic but nevertheless colorful, with yellows intermixed with some magenta hues.

Backlit scenes like this are more challenging to expose properly because of the wide range in light tones between the sky and land. So, I took one exposure for the sky, another for the foreground, and then blended the two to yield a photo having more balanced tones.

Snow Moon
Cape Neddick, Maine

This photo of the full moon is from last night at Nubble Light. I’m fortunate to know a family who owns a beautiful home and waterfront property down the street from Nubble Light. So, I was able to stand on shore and use a long telephoto lens to capture the rising “snow moon”. After a slow month of photography (mostly due to weather), it felt great to be out again! I have a lot of photos of Nubble Light, but this is the first one emphasizing a full moon.

Rosy Countryside
Cabot, Vermont
This is from yesterday morning at the A.M. Foster Bridge in Cabot. I had planned to shoot sunrise from Peacham (prompted by an encouraging forecast), but when I pulled up at dawn, it was obvious that the forecast was wrong. So, I drove another 30 minutes to Cabot in search of a better sky. I arrived before sunrise just as snow showers moved out of the area, leaving behind a fresh dusting and a moody winter atmosphere. The rising sun was kind enough to paint the westerly sky in nice shades of rose. I was alone in the snowy field, all except for the friendly Golden Retriever that insisted I rub its belly from time to time. It was a frigid -6 when I took this photo.

Pier at Fort Foster
Kittery Point, Maine

I'm finally getting out of the holiday mood by diving back into photography. This is from last night at Fort Foster on Kittery Point. In winter, the sun sets at the end of the pier, increasing the potential for colorful skies. I took a 30-second exposure to smooth out the water surface, as the sun crossed the horizon and cast its last ray upon clouds above.

Once again, it's that time of year when I look back at the last twelve month to assess what I've left behind (photographically speaking). So, here are my 20 favorite photos from 2016. Enjoy! http://bit.ly/2i0uxf9

December Sky
Jamestown, Rhode Island

One last photo from Monday night at Beavertail Point. This was taken after sunset from one of the little outlets looking out onto Narragansett Bay. It was a decent but unevenly-colored sky.

Cliffside
Newport, Rhode Island
I love this little lighthouse! Castle Hill Light is built right into the side of the cliff, making it look like a natural feature of the coastline. This photo is from Wednesday afternoon, as the setting sun cast it’s last rays upon Narragansett Bay. There were some cumulus clouds close to the horizon, while feather-like cirrus clouds sailed at higher elevation.

"Shadow of Former Self"
Woods Hole, Massachusetts

This is from Thursday sunset at Falmouth Heights, near Woods Hole on Cape Cod. These old pier ruins are on Vineyard Sound, facing Martha's Vineyard in the background. The photo is a 30-second exposure, resulting in silky water and smooth clouds.
