In my social media classes, I call it convergence.  It is not only about your online social media activity.  For personal branding, social media complements and should never replace your physical networking.

Mark gives some good examples for connecting offline with online personal branding.  I like the idea to include your Twitter and/or Google+ ID on each slide of a presentation.

Beginning a couple of months ago, some companies’ managed business pages began to see a noticeable fall-off in activity. Their posts were reaching a much smaller number of fans than usual. After several weeks of tracking this trend, several companies asked Facebook if this was something on their end or had Facebook changed its algorithm. These ‘hard’ assets, don’t of themselves, execute strategy, make sales and so on. It takes people to do that. People are the ‘soft’ assets organisations purchase in order to execute strategy. Mismanagement of these ‘soft’ assets can have very hard consequences just as there are big payoffs in managing people well.
