Ask a Q ("Help me!")  -

Hi All,

I have an issue that I'm hoping someone can resolve.  I have a data set from which I am creating multiple pivot tables and charts based on those tables.  In my previous version of Excel (2003) I could copy the chart, paste a new copy and change the data range to a different pivot table (this would keep the formatting the same for each chart without my having to reformat).  I've found that when I'm referencing a pivot table for the source pivot chart, I cannot edit the data range.  This option is greyed out in Excel 2007 (refer to the picture attachment).  I have a work around, but it requires that i copy the pivot table data and paste it as 'values' and reference those values.  This is very inefficient.  Can anyone tell me why I can't modify the data range once I have built a pivot chart from data in a pivot table?

Thanks for any assistance!

Sounds like a pivot cache issue.  That means the chart is dependent on the existence of a pivot cache in order for you to modify it.  If you remove the range (the input for the pivot cache), you can't have an object of type PivotChart.  That's the only thing that comes to mind; I could be wrong.

Have you tried saving the chart as a Template?  Go to the Design Tab under PivotChart Tools and look on the left-hand side of the ribbon.  Save it with a name.  Create a new chart from a different pivot table.  Then click the "Change Chart Type" button on the Design tab and select your newly saved template. You can change the chart type again to get the same formatting while changing actual chart types (from bar to pie or something else).

No, Apple Is NOT the Most Valuable Company Ever

Just about every major news outlet this week has been reporting that Apple is the most valuable company in history. But this is true only if you fail to adjust for inflation.

Microsoft holds the record for the highest valuation of any company in history. In 1999, Microsoft was worth $620.6 which, when adjusted for inflation, is worth $856 billion in today's money.

So please stop being dumb, media.

Alamo always has a competitive price, this was no surprise. My experience with Alamo at SEATAC last weekend was absolutely top notch. When I bypassed the counter as usual and when I entered the lot, I was immediately greeted by Willie, an Alamo employee. Willie was polite, friendly and helpful. By being so friendly he learned that we were going skiing at Mt Hood for 1 day at the end of our trip. As it turns out, they have been getting record snow. Willie was concerned about our vehicle choice and guided us to a small SUV that was more suited to our needs (even though this was not what we had originally reserved). The terrain was intense at times and the vehicle was more than capable. We never slipped a tire. The gas mileage was great and the Sirius Radio upgrade was well worth the $5 per day. Thanks to Willie, our drive through the mountains was stress free, and amazing. The drive would have been much scarier had we gone with our original vehicle. Thanks Willie. Thanks Alamo. Keep up the great service!

The courtesy shuttle is very convenient and the drivers are nice. The room is nice and the breakfast is better than Hampton Inn.

Best Chinese delivery in my area. It's quick / casual chinese, not a 5 star restaurant, so set your expectations. I judge take out Chinese by the General Tso's Chicken and Sesame chicken because that is my household's typical order. Both are very good and the prices are fair. Sometimes delivery isn't available during big events in the area (e.g. during race weekend), so keep that in mind.

The electric reclining seats are fantastic. They are so good that they make up for the limited concessions.
