Freiburg Acuity (and more) Test (FrACT) at version 3.8.2
As I advertise here
https://plus.google.com/102337327214567011703/posts/frdLqYMu8H6
a new version of my visual assessment battery is out. For visual acuity you have as optotypes Landolt Cs, tumbling Es, Letters (ETDRS-type), gratings (only for low vision) etc. There's also contrast, and vernier, and faces. It's free: While fun to play with for anyone, to correctly apply and interpret, some optometric or ophthalmologic background is required.

How many balls
In the initial share by +Akosha there is an amazing range of answers, from 16 to 56… so the 95%, while too exact (97.3% of all statistics are wrong!) may be in the ballpark.
My take:
First, discern between visible balls, and balls making up that pile.
VIsible: 16, that's rather easy.
Full pile: we have a 4x4 bottom layer, then 3x3, 2x2, 1x1.
16 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 30 in my book.
Anyone disagrees?

Can you count the number of balls?

Tips for #Scientific   #Citation Management with Zotero
Twice already I have commented here on #Zotero for citation management and pointed to my list of recipes and problem work-arounds. Since the powers that be at the Medical Center, University of Freiburg saw fit to change everything in our online presence, the URL has changed. I also updated the list little, here goes:
http://www.uniklinik-freiburg.de/index.php?id=7618
By now I've used Zotero in about 20 papers, and have gotten used to its little quirks. At the same time, I note no progress for 3 major (IMO) shortcomings: (1)no interactive control over citation style details (e.g. the  "disambiguate-add-givenname" property, or the “et al.” count), (2) no advanced search in group libraries, and (3) no useful drag-and-drop.
Well, it's still nice as it is, and there's always hope…

Anamorphosis in Art
If the accompanying photo does not make sense to you, it will after you visit this page http://michaelbach.de/ot/sze-anamorph/ in my website on   #visualperception , visual phenomena and #opticalillusion . There's a cute animation “Show me” (even if I say so :).

Benham's Top unrolled
On my website on  #visualperception , visual phenomena and #opticalillusion I have recently updated the “Benham Top” http://michaelbach.de/ot/col-Benham/ to a modern Flash-less version. That prompted me to think a little more about it. While historically this has been a spinning top, rotation is not really necessary, it's the spatio-temporal pattern that matters (doubtless this has occurred to many before me). So I “unrolled” the top and made a version without rotation: http://michaelbach.de/ot/col-Benham2/
Interestingly, this easily shows that the pattern does not matter at all!

All along the watchtower
I chanced on this great story + fantastic takes to go with it. Taught me how much work even such great ones need to put into song until it sounds right. Should intrigue anyone who's interested in guitar, possibly others too.
The in-depth story of Jimi Hendrix's iconic cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" - from how Brian Jones almost ruined it to how Vietnam soldiers helped make it a hit.

MacFixit → MacIssues
Over many years I've been following MacFixit. This helped me to discover a number of gems to optimise my  #Mac  use. MacFixit has been discontinued, but Topher Kessler has created http://macissues.com with excellent quality. Recommended.

Rosetta: Arival of Signal
Isn't this nice -- after nearly 3 years of shutdown the Rosetta comet probe awoke today on schedule. Congratulations, ESA!
