An interesting (albeit long) article on Brasil's history combating the mosquito, a major problem ahead of the next summer games.

I find it hard to believe that I've managed to eliminate 50% of my gas usage by driving electric on the Volt.  I had estimated that I might get as high as 1/3 before buying it, since I do a lot of long-distance driving for work and the electric range is just 60km but it turns out that amount makes a good dent in many trips as well as eliminating in-town gas usage.

When is the last year you believe a major corporation managed to profit from nearly slave labour in the west? You'd probably be wrong...

Fantastic interview with Hugh Laurie on #CBC Q right now, talking about his new character on the Night Manager.

Very awesome discovery

Behemoth black hole was found in an unlikely place. Astronomers uncovered a near-record breaking supermassive black hole, weighing 17 billion suns in the center of a galaxy in a sparsely populated area of the universe. The observations may indicate that these monster objects may be more common than once thought. Details: http://go.nasa.gov/25LX6AO

I already have no interest in going to the theatre any more.  I invested in a decent projector and speaker system at home years ago and have saved a lot of money not rushing off to spend $12/person + popcorn + pop + parking each time we want to see a new film.  If I really care about seeing the movie and supporting it, I buy the Blu-Ray near release.  If I don't, I wait for the Netflix treatment.  I certainly would not pay for this ...

Steven Spielberg, JJ Abrams and Martin Scorsese are already shareholders, while Christopher Nolan and James Cameron are opposed

Don't use crappy network hardware...
Sometimes it pays to spend. The central bank of Bangladesh has found that out the hard way, as police are blaming its loss of $80m during a hack on crappy $10 routers.

Now they just need to find a potentially habitable moon orbiting the planet.

This is pretty sad actually but I did enjoy the crossed out Newton (I own two) and how they include killing the floppy.

Introduction
I tend to think a lot, and I make a living doing a lot of computer related stuff.  I enjoy photography, coding, gaming, music and movies and spending time with my family.

See http://mikebabcock.ca/aboutme for some more of my idiosyncrasies and my personality profile.

As for G+, I post about whatever I find interesting at the moment -- I don't have anything to plug or push on anyone except my thoughts.  If I share a product or website, its because I actually value it or found it interesting.

I love photography, and art in general, I enjoy good stories, books, video games and movies.  I'm an expert in many things computer-related, including networking, Linux, programming and a variety of database and hardware thing-a-ma-bobs.

Feel free to ask me random computer questions if you see me online, I may be busy, and I may not know, but if I do I try to help out.  Mind you, if you're making money off my answers, send me some of it ;-).
