Via archival video, a journalist that I have long admired from afar, Ken Screven, explores his family's post-slavery history -- very difficult to do, since slavery and its long aftermath suppressed the keeping of family records and traditions.

"As [Shurka] shared his personal story of surviving 'ex-gay' torture with the House Health, Welfare and Institutions Subcommittee, some members of the GOP-controlled body looked away; others just rolled their eyes."
Just days after a bill was introduced in Virginia that would outlaw discredited, debunked, and dangerous "ex-gay" torture therapy for minors, lawmakers in the GOP-controlled legislature killed it in committee.

While the U.S. ex-gay movement collapses, it remains alive and well in Latin America.
“We all got together and said it’s time to produce a statement that is not a statement of apology, but a statement on our beliefs on how conversion therapy harms people."

Shorter SBC: "Whereas thousands of people are born every year with the genes or organs of both sexes, all Christians should say these people don’t exist. Then, all Christians should deny these people their human and constitutional rights, and espouse myths about their personalities. Why? Because butchered Bible verses." #transgender   #southernbaptistconvention

Approximately 600 people have been reported killed on account of their orientation or gender identity in the past 15 months, across the Western Hemisphere. Those reported deaths are a small fraction of the actual total, most of which are overlooked or ignored by law enforcement. Nearly half the victims were trans women.

With U.N. assistance, Salvadoran community leaders released a video two weeks ago calling upon El Salvador and other nations to punish violent hate crimes equally, and to affirm LGBT persons' right to life and liberty.

As hate and gang violence continue, so does immigration of Central Americans seeking U.S. asylum.

Faith-based NGOs respond to the #refugee crisis.

Internal and external displacement have common causes: lack of well-being in #Salvadoran communities, generalized violence and the state’s inability to safeguard people’s lives and impose rule of law by prosecuting criminal organizations.
[Episcopal News Service – San Salvador, El Salvador] Irene's 13-year-old daughter disappeared leaving school on Feb. 15, 2012, in a gang-controlled municipality just northwest of San Salvador. The teen's body was found two days later; Irene learned about it from a local television station.

Sales experience was excellent, but just 35 days later -- a few days beyond the 30-day limited warranty -- my 2008 car's transmission is experiencing trouble and the engine is overheating. This CarMax dealer's service department does not answer its phone or return voice messages the same day. When they did call back, they told me that they were all booked for the next 10 days. So I took my car to a local dealer, who told me that my newly bought car was 22,000 miles behind in maintenance, had faulty transmission parts and incorrectly installed brakes. Apparently, CarMax does not really inspect, recondition or maintain its used cars very well. MaxCare covered about $2,000, leaving me with $1,100 in expenses to bring the car up to what it should have been prior to purchase. And two months later, I'm still waiting for the CarMax service department to get around to fixing the brakes; its backlog of appointments is now about 15 days. If you buy from CarMax: 1. DON'T believe the marketing hype about 12 hours of reconditioning or a 125-point inspection for each sold car. 2. DO plan to reserve a lot of time in the first 20 days to battle the unreachable service department. 3. If you discover a problem 20-30 days after purchase, you're out of luck -- you won't be able to get an appointment within the warranty period. 4. MaxCare is a necessity unless you don't mind paying even more for the things that CarMax should have done prior to sale.

This extra-large 7-Eleven is located in a reasonably good neighborhood next to several motels, local restaurants, and a full-service car wash. It has an exceptionally large gas station and parking area. Inside, the store features typical 7-Eleven fare -- plus injera bread which is popular with local fans of Ethiopian cuisine. If you're stopping in the neighborhood for a fast meal, avoid the Taco Bell-KFC across the street -- service there is extremely slow (20 minutes per order). There are better and faster chain restaurants in downtown Silver Spring (ten blocks north), and a speedy McDonald's drive-thru just five blocks south on Georgia Avenue.
