Approximately 600 people have been reported killed on account of their orientation or gender identity in the past 15 months, across the Western Hemisphere. Those reported deaths are a small fraction of the actual total, most of which are overlooked or ignored by law enforcement. Nearly half the victims were trans women.

With U.N. assistance, Salvadoran community leaders released a video two weeks ago calling upon El Salvador and other nations to punish violent hate crimes equally, and to affirm LGBT persons' right to life and liberty.

As hate and gang violence continue, so does immigration of Central Americans seeking U.S. asylum.
