YEAH!!! Let those processors EAT!!! Experimenting with X265 encode of tv show recordings. X264 works perfectly fine but if I can halve the size of the resulting file and have the same quality I'll be happy.

I'm missing two of my previous processors. My 386/16Mhz that I gave to my mom and my dual Celeron 366's that were overclocked to 550Mhz in an Abit BP6 mobo. That computer lasted some years too. Don't know why I didn't keep those two Celeron processors. May have given the computer to someone. Loved that computer.

Starting upper left.
(Not pictured) Started with 386/16Mhz
Cyrix(yup) 486/66
Intel 486/66
Pentium(OG) 75Mhz
Cyrix(yup again) 166Mhz
(Not pictured) Then came dual celerons
Next is Athlon XP 2200+
Intel Pentium D(Core2Duo) 3Ghz
Athlon Phenom II(quad core 3.4Ghz)

Now presently the GLORIOUS Core i7 5820k 6 cores running at 4Ghz.

This is the final parts list for the new super computer. I even manually added in the Drobo ( http://www.drobostore.com/products/drobo-4-bay ) that I'm getting for my easy NAS, as well as the HD7870 that I'll be using for a bit. At our current 1600x900 resolution this SHOULD be fine. I was going to repurpose this current computer into a PLEX server, but, with the Drobo, I won't need it. I can use all of the drives I currently have as backups for my 100's of movies and put them in the NAS and let IT manage redundancy( I'm a risk taker). Then adding bigger drives later as I get them will give easy storage increases and HOPEFULLY no data loss.

I have a 240GB SSD in the OLD OLD PC which I'll be taking out. I also think there is another old laptop HDD in it as well. 500GB IIRC. Maybe even another 3.5 HDD but I don't know. If there is another 3.5, it goes in the Drobo( which will already have this computer 1.5TB, a 2TB, and a 1TB). This current PC also has a 256GB SSD which I'll be reusing and a 3.5 which goes in the Drobo. I also got a 256GB M2.2280 Intel 600P storage for the super computer, aka "The Beast", which will be for the OS.

So, The Beast will have 256GB M2 for OS and 256GB and 240GB SSD's for storage. Possibly another 2.5" spinning drive no matter the speed for "other" storage. As well as a NAS for EVERYTHING ELSE. It should scream. Especially compared to this current PC. Can't wait to build this and test some bluray encodes.

I used the code TWIT100 for saving $100 off Drobo by the way.

Gabe sent me this just now. The last part of "The Beast". Now can't wait to see how long it takes the Drobo to work its mojo on the drives I'm putting in it. Then, once I have two drives in it and set up for single drive failure, how long it will take to work MORE mojo to rearrange said mojo to dual drive failure when the third drive goes in it.

The mojo would be faster on blank drives. The most I can have is two blank. So I'm using two biggest I have first. Then transfer data over then put in next drive.

:-D

6 cores and 12 threads at 4Ghz does not help transferring files from one spinning HDD to another spinning HDD on an external removable HD bay. Getting one disk ready to have EVERYTHING I'm going to back up so when my 4 bay Drobo arrives I can put all the "other" disks in it and then just slide everything on this one main disk over. Then, put this last disk in the Drobo as well.

So help me if this ONE disk crashes between now and the time the Drobo arrives......

I better not have just jinxed myself

I think this is all the videos I took while building "The Beast".

By far the worst experience ever installing Windows. Not because of endless updates, but because of my not normal NVMe drive I used for the OS. I still don't know which UEFI change made it work but I sure am happy I have a button I can press on back to reset my CMOS. Once I figured it out got lucky, it was less than 10 minutes.

An email I sent to +Rich Parker or +Richard Parker, not sure which account he's using now, on October 4th 2009:

Ok. Like I said in text. Processor I want is AMD Phenom 2 965. It's a 4 core overclockable processor. The motherboard was an MSI board with some newer chipset that allowed DDR3 ram and 2 ATI cards to run at full 16X PCI-E each when running in Crossfirex mode. A lot of the cards I saw throtled cards down to 8X when crossfire. This one allows 4 cards to run in crossfire at 8X each but I don't think I'll be spending money on 4 cards just yet. The mobo allows easy overclocking of processor and vid card. It was an 845FX or some such chipset MSI board.

The vid card is where I'm not as sure. There is an ATI Radeon HD 4770 that came out a few months ago that is cheaper and over clockable. I'm leaning towards it. Two actually and then again, down the road, 4 possibly if games would support it. I'm going to go with ATI since the processor is AMD and the board is built for crossfirex and not sli. There are some better ati cards but I'm not sure about better for how much more money. I'm going to go with 2 cards reguardless.

Everything else is what ever I can find cheap. The things that I need to concentrate on are CPU/GPU/MOBO. Yeah I know I'll need a huge fatty power supply and ventilation/cooling so don't tell me. Like I said. Whatever I can find cheap on everything else.

This is still our main gaming/ripping/encoding/transcoding machine. Our i7 laptop that I've posted about recently is better at ripping/encoding but I just don't sit at it enough. The ONLY changes to the above machine since then is I went to 12GB of RAM and now have an HD7870 in it. Our monitor is only 1600x900 so the video card is adequate. Pretty sure that the link below is the build I'm going to be doing now. I've been reading for days...and by that I mean hours and hours and hours of reading. It was either this 5820k build or a similar 6700k build. The only difference being the processor and mobo. I WILL overclock the CPU hence the water cooler. I'll reuse the current 7870 video card and see how it fares while gaming with upgraded parts around it. That will determine if a GPU update is needed.

If I can get 6-7 more years out of another build I'm good with that. A GPU update every 3-5 years is OK by me. I'm certain that going from an old 4 core to a hyper threaded 6 core will be the "bees knees" in my encoding wait time. Hopefully 12-16(or more) hour bluray rip/transcode will be reduced to 4 or less hours. Even in half and I'll be happy. Based on the times that my i7 laptop does compared to the desktop, I'll probably be picking my jaw up off the floor admiring the speed difference.

The current 4 core machine will be kept around though. I believe it will just be the Plex server/guest gaming machine. Mainly just the Plex server. Use 6 core machine to transcode and store on the 4 core for streaming.

Updating my wife's laptop and was just admiring that uptime. As I'm doing a dist-upgrade on it and will have to reboot and lose that. ElementaryOS Linux in case you are wondering. Bought this a few years back. The Callisto from Aug 2013. Still a beast. Quad core i7 with hyperthreading and 8GB RAM. It tears Linux up.

Watching a show last night when all of a sudden the screen went funky. The signal goes through my receiver so the sound never stopped. We thought it was part of the show until +Lisa Abernathy smelled burning. I immediately unplugged the TV and the odor was strong. This TV survived a lightning strike that fried most every electronic in our house a few years back. It also survived an ice storm that ripped our electricity main off our house when a limb came down on the wire causing our wires inside to arc in places.

Well the 46" Sony 1080p has been replaced with 55" Vizio. 4k with both versions of HDR. HDR-10 and Dolby Vision. Even has a small Android tablet as a "remote". So far so good.

Our go to place for camping close to home. For sure the primitive sites are not reservable so you can always luck out and maybe get a site. Close to a small town to get supplies. Sites are generously big too. Not too cramped like some places we've been.

For milk and bread or a weeks worth of food this is where we go. They have just about all you can want for normal meals. For something more exotic you may have to go elsewhere. But for inexpensive essentials, you aren't going to find them cheaper without it being on sale somewhere else.
