SEO Critical Thinker & Data Marketeer
Introduction
I believe in algorithm-based SEO and marketing over guess work and general platitudes. The enjoyment of SEO is the challenge in finding out how Google's algorithm work.

Seasoned work experience on both client-side and in-house side of SEO in a variety of industries from Ecommerce, Enterprise, Publishing, and Gaming. I've spoken at four SMX conferences (domestic and international) and love espousing my views through SEO musings on what I think Google can and cannot do.

I focus heavily around Web Analytics (Google Analytics in particular) and love the idea of using regression analyses to determine Google's algorithm. Additionally, any way I can tie revenue back to the work in any marketing channel is a large plus for me.

How to tell when someone enjoys what they do? When they have fun with responses like the meme inside the article...
One of the concerns that people have had over switching to HTTPS is whether there would be any PageRank loss, even a small amount, by redirecting all pages from the HTTP version to the HTTPS version. After all, no one wants to make the switch for the tiny ranking boost (which acts as more of …

The One Kind of 404 That Could Be Quietly Killing Your Search Efforts

Do 404 errors hurt SEO? It’s a simple question. However, the answer is far from simple. Most 404 errors don’t have a direct impact on SEO, but they can eat away at your link equity and user experience over time.

There’s one variety of 404 that might be quietly killing your search rankings and traffic.

I'm still amazed at how many people ignore their 404s. It's one of the few things that we, as SEOs, have control over and staying on top of them can absolutely add value to your search efforts.

Would it be a lot to ask for Search Console to not send us a warning about malware/unwanted software when you don't provide any sample URLs or detected dates, +John Mueller ?

Makes it a bit hard to find the issue and makes it comes off as a bug in the system (if it's not).

If I've got thousands/millions of pages, that ain't going to narrow it down if no URL is given where this issue came up, much less WHEN it was seen. :)

Gotta share this fun one.
Ethan Kanat, Zendesk's Creative Brand Manager, explains how he turned a search term into a marketing campaign centered on a fake grunge band named "Zendesk Alternative."

It's been a bit since the last time the NYT jumped into the Google Search Results fray, this time focusing on local search.

+Tim Capper is sure to have a rant or two perhaps?

Odds are good that when you search Google for someone to help you get into your home or car, results will include poorly trained subcontractors who will squeeze you for cash.

The problem to address is the concerns, not to say the team is aware of the situation.

That concern is people don't believe there is a functional difference that an algorithm (or person) can find between the following situations:

1) I work to improve getting backlinks that I believe will help, but instead get me punished
2) I work to improve getting backlinks to a competitor as if I believe will help, but instead get "me" punished

That needs to be addressed (even in a non-specific way) to help ease people's concerns.

Negative SEO is always a hot topic, since the idea that a competitor can merely point a ton of crappy backlinks at a site to see it penalized is always a scary one to site owners. John Mueller was asked about spammy backlinks from a negative SEO perspective, specifically as it relates to Penguin. Since …

Matt Cutts of Google who is still on leave as far as we know, was on TWIG #336 and he spent about 15 minutes going through the core updates, Penguin, the webmaster team and more. It starts at the one
