SEO Critical Thinker & Data Marketeer
Introduction
I believe in algorithm-based SEO and marketing over guess work and general platitudes. The enjoyment of SEO is the challenge in finding out how Google's algorithm work.

Seasoned work experience on both client-side and in-house side of SEO in a variety of industries from Ecommerce, Enterprise, Publishing, and Gaming. I've spoken at four SMX conferences (domestic and international) and love espousing my views through SEO musings on what I think Google can and cannot do.

I focus heavily around Web Analytics (Google Analytics in particular) and love the idea of using regression analyses to determine Google's algorithm. Additionally, any way I can tie revenue back to the work in any marketing channel is a large plus for me.

UGH. This is an unhelpful change. Here's a fun test with the service.

I've found a few three word phrase, mashed all the terms together without any spaces. Gave me the same monthly volume.

Here's the problem. Writing changes over time and it helps to know what people use to provide a better user experience. An example: there was a time when the phrase "pre-lit" was shifting between "pre-lit" "pre lit" and "prelit".

Always good to see a technical SEO speak out in force on this topic. Worthwhile read. #SEO
My view on Technical SEO is more than only making the site work properly. I will always be looking for ways to enhance the products in ways which also contributes to growth in SEO traffic. This may include highly technical projects like the one described here. This is why I believe Technical SEO is more than just “fixing” the site, it’s the way the product works.

Going to call that lazy: If you're basing your algos on engagement metrics, better be prepared to handle the spam that comes after it.

Good article about Technical #seo
(Disclaimer: The post is being written to piggy back on the conversations started around a post written by Clayburn Griffin on Search Engine Land. In fact, it’s perfect timing for me to shame…

Glad to see +Patrick Hathaway taking a stand on this issue.

#seo
In a response to a column published earlier this week about the place of technical SEO, contributor Patrick Hathaway argues that technical SEO is much more than a "nice to have" feature.

Yes, yes, and no!

(No as in: +AJ Kohn is correct. no, you cannot optimize for it).

The RankBrain Survival Guide

This is a guide to surviving RankBrain. I created it, in part, because there’s an amazing amount of misinformation about RankBrain. And the truth is there is nothing you can do to optimize for RankBrain.

My latest post addresses the shiny-new thing syndrome overtaking the SEO industry.

Clever way to spam-hack Google business. Probably could have spent a little bit extra to make it prettier though...

Via +AJ Kohn: How Google is Remaking Itself as a “Machine Learning First” Company (A must read for anyone in search) #seo

From the article: "RankBrain went online in April 2015" & "it's involved in every query" & "it’s hugely effective".
If you want to build artificial intelligence into every product, you better retrain your army of coders. Check.

This is either an awesomely sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek post or just another bad correlation is X and thus very strong (when it's still low-to-none). Sometimes just hard to tell online, so going to leave that for someone else to decide.

Everyone loves quick wins, right? These little things that have big impact. Well, “On Page SEO” has been such a thing for a very, very long time. Keyword d

The concept that it is better to leave people with the wrong impression and let others be led astray is something I vehemently disagree with. They our others will be promoting it and it is our job as those in the know, as experts, to stand up and educate, not let others wallow in ignorance. Is there a point of diminishing returns? Sure, but not for a first time writer.

The hyperbole you use is as valid as saying we should have done nothing against any fascist or communist coming to power. That we fighting against them only makes them stronger. To me that means being cowardly and sticking ones head in the sand.

Transparency, light, and advocacy wins out than a hope that ignorance will somehow go away.

New Mobile SEO Tool

The new Varvy mobile SEO tool is live now.
I think the best thing about it is that you can see all the mobile factors at once.
Tool reports if any page resources are blocked from Googlebot, provides the mobile friendly score and the performance score, displays redirects (and what type), mobile HTTP headers, relevant mobile markup such as viewport, vary headers, rel=canonical and rel=amphtml .
The in-depth guide to Google mobile optimization. See what your page looks like on mobile and learn how to make it look better and work better for mobile SEO.

Think thin content is just a Google algorithm problem? Think again -> Softonic.com hit with manual action for ‘thin content’ #seo

Search visibility in U.S. dropped from ~9.9M to 7.0M starting in late May (when the site was first penalized). That's based on SEMrush data.
