Dear Paul! Thank you for taking your time and learning Esperanto. I can see your passion and your excitement about this language but first of all Esperanto is Not just a hobby language. Today we have the Internet, mobile phones, social media and people from all over the world can use them. But neither smartphones nor the internet are the main tool for communication. The real main tool for communicating with people is language. We all need a common language to really communicate with each other.
Right now I have friends from Ukraine, France, South Korea, Germany, Israel, Malaysia, Italy and so on that I can call them, we Can hear each other but we Can't talk to each other. We have to try to speak in English roughly, which is the language of neither of us. English is just the Lingua Franca nowadays and it will probably change to something else a few years later, as it did many times during the history of mankind, as it happened to Persian, Greek, Latin, Akkadian, Aramaic, Arabic, French and etc.
Right now according to the 2015 edition of Ethnologue (Languages of the World) published by SIL International, the total number of people who speak Mandarin as their first or second language is 1.030 million, which is 190 million more than people who speak English, again as their first or second language. 190 million people is approximately 2/3 of the U.S population. Personally I have no idea how to learn Mandarin if it became the lingua franca in my age!
HOPEFULLY, there’s no country were many people speak Esperanto. Because this language supposed to be for everyone. The question that I often ask at this point is that, when can something be for everyone? Well… When it’s for no one. Just like the air, the moon, the sun or our planet Earth! Chinese, English, French, Spanish,… in the first place are all national languages, but Esperanto is literally an international language. A languages for anyone that’s for no one.
You said, the problem with Esperanto is that it’s not useful! True but have you ever asked yourself why such an easy and romantic language shouldn’t be useful?!
Humans are the most peace-seeker and at the same time the most brutal worrier of species have been existed. War and peace are the world's biggest unsolved mysteries and the most mind blowing paradoxes in the essence of human nature. In fact, human in relationship with his biotype is the sum of contradictions, which means, human is enamored of human and ruthlessly is his own predator. Some philosophers say:
Human beings are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain,
Other members uneasy will remain.
And some others say: “man is a wolf of man”. Homo al Homo estas Lupo!
Nevertheless, in the struggle between war and peace, just like fish that need water to survive, Esperanto needs Peace for survival and propagation, but War, the first enemy of Esperanto sears the roots of this tender sapling and doesn’t let the language of hope flourish and grow. I believe that the importance and necessity of a common language will be obvious for anyone who believes in globalization and world peace.
Since Google+ and YouTube are splitting up, we use the old futures this way!
