For weeks, Kristy and her son, Luis slept in the one thing she had left in the world...her car. In the stifling heat, she ran the air conditioning in 10-minute intervals to stay cool. Then she came to Metropolitan Ministries and finally had a place to stay. “It felt like heaven on earth,” she says. “I took a hot shower and thought to myself, ‘Thank you, God!’ Then I cried myself to sleep that first night knowing I had hope back in my life again.” Not having a safe place to rest is one of the most unsettling things about being homeless. Thanks to you and the support from the community, women and children like Kristy and Luis are getting the help they really need. ‪#‎BeHope‬

Did you know? The most unmet need we are seeing at the Ministries today is the availability of affordable housing for low-income families.
According to Out of Reach, the latest annual report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), "In no state can a minimum wage worker afford a one-bedroom rental unit at the average Fair Market Rent working a standard 40-hour work week, without paying more than 30% of their income."

A minimum wage worker in Florida needs to clock 79 hours a week to afford a 1-bedroom apartment and 112 hours a week for a 2-bedoom apartment! Tampa Bay ranks 6th in Florida for a lack of affordable housing options.

This is one of the main reasons families end up homeless. We are prioritizing this issue and working tirelessly to develop partnerships with landlords willing to work with our clients.

Your support helps make this happen. Thank you. ‪#‎BeHope‬

We had a very special announcement this week in our leadership meeting. Our own Chef Eric Champagne was promoted and introduced as our new Executive Chef at Metropolitan Ministries. Chefs Luis Soto and Cliff Barsi were ecstatic to share the fantastic news with him. Here is Eric receiving his new white coat while his precious family of four (including a new born baby) stood by in support. Congratulations, Chef Eric! Please share the good news with your friends!

#LifeTransformationTuesday: Left with few options after her husband walked out on her, Linda bounced around from couch to couch with her son, before finally finding a more permanent home at Metropolitan Ministries.
It was here where she found her calling in culinary arts and now serves as a prominent team member of Inside the Box Café, Metropolitan Ministries’ social enterprise in the Bay area.

#MetroStoriesMonday: A room of our own. It’s something a lot of us take for granted. For 8-year-old Billy and 6-year-old Leroy, a room was all they wanted.
