The installation was done offshore, on an oil platform in the Caspian Sea. Treating the crude oil direct in the well has offshore even more advantages, as the servicing of an oil or gas well is offshore far more expensive. Especially on unmaned platforms, as all the workforce and material has to be transport to side. So by extend the time in between cleanings, using MERUS technology,  is saving the owner of the well a lot of money.

Heat exchangers in the oil and gas, might look after a few month of operation like seen below. In this tubular heat exchanger crude is heated prior further process. Such a heat exchanger full of scale is hardly able to perform its task and has regularly to be cleaned. Installing MERUS Rings at the inlet is slowing down the process of fouling and make a stop of production and the manual cleaning not so often needed.

Lately we have done an installation at a waste water processing plant in the USA. This plant receives produced water from the shale gas or fracking industries.
The first step of the process is to heat the brine in a heat exchanger which leads to fouling. We have done an installation at a preheater for this process. What cant be seen on the picture how cold it has been during the installation.

Improving performance/cost ratio

Growth in offshore water treatment
The offshore oil and gas industry is experiencing a great deal of upheaval as demand for resources continues to rise. One of the biggest challenges companies are presented with is the need to ensure water usage is as efficient as possible, most notably in terms of what is used for extraction. Treatment solutions are also required for separating water from oil, especially when dealing with the emulsion that is left behind after refining. On top of this rigs need to be supplied with fresh water supplies for staff; additional measures are needed to accomplish this.

Water treatment in the offshore oil and gas industry is estimated to be worth around $1.76 billion. Expenditure is growing by around 4.4% per year as companies target efficiency. The majority of the spending comes from mature oil fields, ultra-deep water projects and oil recovery projects. The first two projects have a high water demand because a large volume is required to help extraction. The additional resources used for extraction directly increase the amount of effort needed to separate oil and water during the refining stage. Both the volume of fluid needed to extract oil and the separation requirements lead to higher operating costs, meaning companies need to look at efficiency for savings.

With offshore services, almost all of the water used for cooling water treatment and other processes is from the sea because it is readily available and cheaper than trying to transport freshwater. The water that is used needs to be carefully handled and treated to reduce the salinity, otherwise it would cause a great number of problems in the systems used to carry and manage it. A great deal of effort goes in to treating the fluid so that it can be used without causing high levels of corrosion and other damages to these systems.

We continue to look for new methods to satisfy the cooling water treatment and seawater treatment needs of the offshore industry without relying on chemicals and other processes that could be harmful to the environment and employees. Seawater treatment remains very challenging but technological advances like the MERUS Ring deliver great benefits both in terms of sustainability and efficiency.

Using seawater either for cooling near the sea or offshore is required. Also using sea water to pressurize the reservoirs is very common at certain areas of the world. For instance in Saudi Arabia every day app.15 Million barrel seawater it pumped into the reservoirs. Using so much seawater gives a lot of technical problems. Merus Rings are used in both applications since years very successful.
