It’s two weeks into the New Year and how many of your New Year’s resolutions have you’ve already broken? Stop sweating it if you have, the estimate is that less than 10% of New Year’s resolutions are actually achieved (University of Scranton Psychology Professor John C. Norcross, Ph.D.).

My suggestion to you is to drill down to the why of what prevented you from keeping them rather than feeling like a loser.

Were Your New Year’s Resolutions Too Lofty?
Maybe your New Year’s resolutions had to do with creating healthier behaviors such as exercising more, adopting a Paleo diet, drinking less alcohol , watching less T.V, going to bed at an earlier hour. Trying to change all of these behaviors at the same time is daunting.

All of these require that you create a new habitual way of behaving . It is best to select one at a time to create the change you so desire.

According to B. J. Fogg , author of Transforming Habits there are three distinct steps to follow to create a new positive habit.
steps

1. You Must Pick A Small Action. Resolving to exercise six days a week when you haven’t exercise in years is setting yourself up for failure. Start with two days a week for 15 minutes and then slowly begin to increase the amount of days and the amount of time you work out.

Set your intention of being more active throughout the day by making little changes. You can take the stairs versus using an elevator, park further and walk a little further to get to your destination, or set a timer and get up and walk around your office building a few times a day.

2. You Must Attach The New Action To A Previous Habit. Figure out a habit you already have that is well established. For example, your existing habit of walking into the kitchen and making coffee can act as the stimulus for the new habit of making a kale smoothie or preparing a healthy lunch.

3. You Must Make The New Action Easy To Do For At Least The First Week. Because you are trying to establish a conditioned response, you need to practice the new habit from the existing stimulus from 3 to 7 times before it will “stick” on its own. To help you through this 3 to 7 times phase make it as EASY as possible. Write a note and stick it in your walking shoe that says “Total time today for walk is 30 minutes”. Write a note and put it where you put your keys that says: “Today use the stairs.” Put the kale in the blender and have all your smoothie ingredients ready to go in one spot in the refrigerator.

Your Mindset And Self Talk Correlates With Success Intentions Rather Than Resolutions
The science of changing existing habits or making new ones is based in rewiring your mind to create new neural pathways. Rid yourself of negative self talk and focus on how you want to feel by engaging in healhty habits. Set an intention rather than a resolution.

For example, you could declare,” My intention is to release unwanted weight in the next three weeks so that I feel more energetic, sexier, and self-confident”. You could further strengthen this by the use of feelization, the mental creation of the feelings by exercising the power of thought and imagination. You literally visualize and feel yourself more energized, sexier and confident. This process can be used for any habit that is preventing you from living your best life.

As you can see, you don’t have to beat yourself up for not being able to keep your resolutions. Reevaluate how you want to feel during this new year and create very doable and specific intentions coupled with visualizations of what your life will look and feel like by embracing them.

This New Year can usher in the New You!

6 Tips to Help Boost Your Feel Good Hormones

Does the seemingly unending news of terrorism, senseless acts of violence and the impending election have you feeling off kilter? Maybe, it’s not what’s happening in the world around you, but all of the negative self talk swirling inside of your head that makes you feel so blue.

The good news is; you can activate feel good hormones when you are feeling down in the dumps.

It takes some practice, but it will be well worth the effort.

1. Laugh More And Increase Your Well-Being

Robin Dunbar, a psychologist at Oxford, discovered that the simple muscular exertions involved in producing the familiar ha, ha, ha, of laughter triggers an increase in endorphins, the brain chemicals known for their feel-good effect.

It’s been observed that children laugh about 300 times a day, whereas adults laugh, on average, only about five times each day. That’s a pretty dismal statistic so make a point of creating more avenues for laughter and by doing this you will trigger the release of endorphins.

Instead of watching gory and depressing movies or TV shows, you could begin to watch more comedies. It’s also important to limit the amount of time you spend watching the news that sensationalizes tragedy and violence. Get a daily dose of laughter by visiting the Joke of The Day website, exchange jokes with friends, or call a friend that you can always have a good belly laugh with.

Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan at the Loma Linda University in California, have researched the benefits of laughter and found amazing results. The major benefit of laughter is an increase in your overall sense of well-being. So begin laughing more frequently and increase your level of life satisfaction.

2. Eat Dark Chocolate And Improve Your Mood

You’ll be delighted to hear that dark chocolate contains chemicals that prompt the release of endorphins. All you need to do is to consume one small square two or three times a week – the heart benefits tend to disappear with consumption of larger amounts.

3. Listen To Uplifting Music And Lift Your Spirits

Research proves that when you listen to music you like, your brain releases dopamine, a “feel-good” neurotransmitter. Valorie Salimpoor, a neuroscientist at McGill University, injected eight music-lovers with a radioactive substance that binds to dopamine receptors after they listened to their favorite music. A PET scan showed that large amounts of dopamine were released, which biologically caused the participants to feel emotions like happiness, excitement, and joy.

So the next time you need an emotional boost, listen to your favorite tunes for 15 minutes. That’s all it takes to get a natural high!

4. Exercise To Release Endorphins

The best type of exercise for improving your mood is cardiovascular exercises and aerobics. This is because vigorous exercise helps to release the chemicals necessary for the mood-raising high. Yoga or traditional Pilates are also great as they reduce tension and stress while improving the mood.

Just fifteen to twenty minutes of moderate exercise daily is enough to improve your mood. It’s well worth the commitment to put exercise on your daily calendar. Your outlook on life can change in a short period of time!

5. Connect With Others And Up Your Mood

Researchers from Claremont University in California have done extensive research on the hormone oxytocin and its impact on women. Know as the “love hormone”, it seems to play a greater role in women’s physiology and happiness compared to men’s. There are many beneficial ways ways to release oxytocin . Here are just a few.

For starters, having great sex releases oxytocin. Even hugging others or using a lingering handshakes produces this feel good hormone.

If you love to dance then you are in luck. Dancing creates an instant atmosphere of natural euphoria- precisely what causes oxytocin release.

Forming close bonds with others, engaging in meaningful social activities, heart felt conversations, and doing something kind for others all helps to release oxytocin.

6. Get A Good Night’s Sleep to Feel Upbeat

Lastly, a good night’s sleep is also a great way to regulate oxytocin release. There is a natural spike in oxytocin release five hours after falling asleep. This is why people feeling upbeat and refreshed after getting seven to eight hours of continuous sleep.

As you can see, you don’t have to fall victim to melancholia, hopelessness or powerless . You have the ability to activate feel good hormones that can increase your life satisfaction. You’ll be amaze how your life will begin to unfold.

With that said, if you can not shake these feelings after trying these tips, it is time to seek support from a mental health professional.
