If you love reading, writing, books - of any variety - then you should take a minute or two to read this, by +Tom Uglow. Just brilliant stuff.

Thanks for putting me on to this, my head is whirring. +Tom Uglow - what a wonderful project! A couple of thoughts in the spirit of debate (excuse me +Mel Exon for starting it in your comments, but I'd love your opinion too)...

Firstly, I wonder if you can stray further from books even in your choice of project title. I think what you are proposing borrows from our most recent analog of books, but they in turn borrowed from village elders and wandering bards, should/could we be more adventurous? Are the next generation of authors closer to choreographers and is 'writing' even the right word?

Secondly I wonder if in your explorations you've come across 'Journey', an 'experience' on the PlayStation. It has a singular narrative but every player experiences it differently. It is truly immersive and enjoyed in one sitting (an hour and 30+ minutes). My wife, who hates games went through it twice and there are moments that will bring you to tears and have you grinning with joy - a truly unique experience.

A second reference is something a bit more tangible but equally magical - The Ice Book - http://vimeo.com/19348564 which given where technology and devices has moved in the 3 years since this surfaced could be something rather special.

Thanks for putting this project into the public I can't wait to read(?) what happens next.

"The computer will touch men everywhere and in every way, almost on a minute-to-minute basis. Every man will communicate through a computer, whatever he does. It will change and reshape his life, modify his career and force him to accept a life of continuous change."

In memory of the late, great Doris Lessing who died this weekend at the age of 94, +The Guardian 's podcast on +SoundCloud.

Or just buy a copy of her autobiographies, which are brilliant books in their own right.

She is my favourite author by a country mile: experimental, irascible, mildly mad, fundamentally kind. If you've stopped reading anything longer than a tweet recently, anything she's written is reason enough to pick up a book again.

She also said one of the most energising things you will ever read:

"Whatever you're meant to do, do it now. The conditions are always impossible."

RIP Doris Lessing.

"Irony is a knowing humour found in the gap between what a sign means and its intention, a caricature that illuminates truth, punctures pomposity and satirises power" - like this definition from Katie Glass in The Sunday Times*

*full article sadly behind a paywall.. wouldn't it be smart if a micro payment meant you could share an article? (One I've paid to read in the first place?)

"Some things need to stop, in order for new things to start" - our take on 2013, with some thoughts on what needs to change in 2014.

Happy New Year, everyone. See you on the other side.
“We are sensation junkies, predisposed to excitement, and if that means danger and death, we are ready for it.” ~ Doris Lessing, 'Under My Skin' (part 1 of her autobiography). Since Labs was founded in 2008, at the end of every year we've written a round-up of our favourite memories of the ...

Computing history through the eyes & experience of 4 ground-breaking women. Love this series. via +Alison Lomax
So far, with rare exception, the focus of our computing history series has been on technology—the machines that broke new ground and the people behind them. This time we're approaching it from a different angle, with the release of short films highlighting the stories of four women.

Someone just mentioned the parallels to your 3 little pigs Guardian ad.  It felt like a fair comparison actually.
