March Is Reading Month
Poverty should not prevent any child the chance to learn and thrive in an environment that is enriched by the latest technology. Now, as part of Open eBooks, a White House initiative to transform teaching and learning through digital connectivity and content, a free e-reader app is available to educators that provides access to thousands of digital books, including popular and award-winning titles, provided by major publishers. Learn more about the program here. www.openebooks.net

Celebrating Women’s History Month
March is Women’s History Month! It began back in 1981 after the Pub. L. 97-28 was passed, which authorized and requested that the president name the week beginning March 7, 1982, “Women’s History Week.” Later, in 1987, through the National Women’s History Project’s continuous petitioning of Pub. L. 97-28, Pub. L. 100-9 was passed, deeming March as “Women’s History Month.” Women had to prove that they were capable of doing the same things that men could, and, with that effort, barriers were broken. While change has happened, women are still fighting against issues like pay discrimination, different standards from health insurance companies, and the challenges faced by women and girls of color. While the fight for equality hasn’t ended, the change is definitely worth celebrating. This month, we honor the countless women who strived for equality across America for women’s rights. www.nwhp.org
