Inside Urban Shield,
With Guest Investigative Reporter Shane Bauer

What: Inside Urban Shield Community Forum
When: Friday, October 10th, 7:00 PM
Where: Oakland High School, 1023 MacArthur Blvd, Oakland

Urban Shield is the militarized police exercise and exhibition held annually in the East Bay. It is the biggest event of its kind in the world. Urban Shield 2014 took place Sept. 4th-7th at the Convention Center in downtown Oakland. Urban Shield is a "full-scale regional preparedness exercise" which increasingly relies heavily on the militarization of local law enforcement. In concert with the operational exercises, a vendor exposition is held that promotes an overt and overly aggressive posture featuring deadly weapons and tactics.

A coalition of Bay Area activist groups will be conducting this report-back forum - in which some of the people who participated in the seminars and police exercises will talk about their experiences. Shane Bauer, a journalist who was imprisoned in Iran while hiking, was one of those “insiders.” The forum will include a discussion of next steps to take as opposition to police militarization grows nationally.

An important part of the discussion will be connecting the dots that lead from police militarization to the murder of Michael Brown and the repression of citizen protests in Ferguson, the murder and repression of young men of color right here in Oakland, the training American police departments have gotten and are getting from Israeli military, and the pervasive surveillance we are all subject to.

Inside Urban Shield is endorsed by Code Pink, Media Alliance, the Oakland Privacy Working Group, the Oscar Grant Committee, Bill Of Rights Defense Committee, and Restore the 4th San Francisco.

Directions: From 580, take Park Blvd west one long block; turn right on McKinley Avenue, turn right again on Home Place East, park in the parking lot to your left. Entrance is there, walk past the cafeteria to the auditorium.
