Common Asphalt Paving Problems and McFarlane Asphalt paving Contractors Answers
Do you have driveway cracking that looks like alligator skin? Is the edge of your driveway cracking? Maybe you have a pothole that you keep hitting with your car tire?
While asphalt is a great material to build a driveway with, it can have its share of issues. Some are inherent to the material it self and others are from the the way the paving contractor installed it.
There are many types asphalt failure. We will address some of the most common residential driveway ones here.
How are potholes formed? Potholes come from 3 basic issues . Thin asphalt , an insufficient base in that particular area or standing water.
With the first two examples, the asphalt is flexing due to not enough asphalt being installed , not enough of a stone base or there may be  soft dirt under the stone that the contractor was not aware of. The fix is usually simple . Excavate out the pothole install a more stable stone base. Pave it with the proper amount of asphalt , usually two inches of compacted asphalt, depending on your geographical location.
Standing water or a puddle in the driveway is a more difficult issue.  The water ,over time will weaken the asphalt. If the puddle in the driveway is not very deep say 1/8 inch, it may not be a problem for a very long time or not at all . If it is a substantial amount of water say over a 1/2 inch deep. It may not be so long until you have asphalt failure.
In most cases it is just a matter of filling in the low spot with asphalt to make sure the water drains to where you want it to. In other cases there may not have been enough pitch on the property to make the driveway drain. Installing a cast iron frame and grate and piping it to daylight may be your only option .
Edge cracking is a very common driveway failure. Your edge will crack if the asphalt is thin on the edge or If the edge is constantly being driven on or the driveway does not have enough of a stone base to support the asphalt. The best way to prevent  driveway edge cracking, provided it is installed properly, is to install some type of a border concrete curb, Belgium Block or even 6x6 landscape ties (aka, railroad ties)  Be aware that driveway edging adds a considerable amount of money to the cost of the driveway.
If you are driving over the edge of the driveway and it it cracking. You may want to consider widening the driveway to accommodate your driving patterns if possible.
If widening  the driveway or installing a driveway border won't work, usually the way to fix the cracked edge is to cut out the damaged asphalt restore the stone base as necessary and then replace the asphalt
McFarlane Asphalt knows that an unsupported edge is the weakest part of the driveway so we always recommend a border first or we will recommend widening the driveway to accommodate your driving patterns . If these recommendations are not feasible We make sure to put extra asphalt for the last 6 inches to reenforce the edge of the driveway to help prevent future issues
