Students with Tempe, Arizona Arredondo Elementary have played a hands-on role in the construction of their new school! McCarthy is partnering with the school to provide a unique STEM learning opportunity by engaging them in lessons in masonry, concrete and framing over the course of the school year. Participating students first determine the area of materials and costs cost needed for a portion of the project, then head out to work on building projects.

Last week, students even had a chance to sign a beam that will be used in the new school's structure.

“I love that we get to be involved with something that will help build the school,” said fifth-grade STEM student Brian Street. “Plus it’s really fun!”

Flashback Friday: Our Dallas City Performance Hall project, which was completed in 2012, is still in the spotlight for its sustainable features. Congrats to the city of Dallas on their high-performing (no pun intended) facility! The design and construction team was originally targeting LEED Silver Certification when the project was designed, but significantly exceeded this goal and achieved LEED Platinum instead! Corgan Architect Senior Associate Kirk Johnson attributes this to a focus on water efficiency, energy usage, materials and resources, environmental quality and landscaping. When setting 6,000 cubic yards of concrete on the project, McCarthy used recycled materials in the concrete formula and wash-out pans to collect 990 tons of excess concrete to be recycled.
