Europe calling: the old giant wakes up and calls on its peeps!
now that Europe shows up as the largest continent on G+ self awareness goes up and initiatives to get together flourish.
It all started this Monday with my request to post your country if you were European. I offered to circle the first 500 who would do so without any obligation to circle back. Result: we needed a part2 as we hit the 500 comments limit.

The original post was shared 225 times. You can find it here:

Part 2 is still open and can be found here:

If you didn´t do so already, post there and as long as I have spots free, I will circle you as I want to see my streams come alive during European hours.

There was a shared feeling that it would be great to get some attention from G+ for Europe with official hangouts from the community managers during European times, feature roll-outs from Google no longer restricted to the US, having some central point to share European circles and last but not least the desire to have hangouts without having to burn the midnight oil.

To help solve this and get Europeans together on the same page I created +Europeans on G+ It already has three managers out of the community but feel to offer a bit of your time as it must be a community project. Circle the page if you didn´t already do so. The first post can be found here:

The community of Europeans responded and we got the following new initiatives:

An compilation of the who is who in the EU countries:
The Euro 200 Circle by +Euro Maestro
Who are the most followed in Europe ? Who have the highest Klout score ? This circle helps to answer those questions. This is sort of a Who's Who list of Europe.
https://plus.google.com/107040353898400532534/posts/YPv8bzRwYXD

Next the even more exclusive circle of the most followed Europeans from all over Europe as compiled by me thanks to assistance of +CircleCount the best profiler site there is and they happen to be European as well :)
The Euro Top 50 Circle: Europeans with the largest follower count
No pages, just people based in geographic Europe who were already famous or got their followers through relentless efforts on G+
https://plus.google.com/112352920206354603958/posts/QUEP9UT9iVT

An attempt to crowd source the most valuable Europeans on and for G+ by +Gabriel Vasile
MAKING A "BEST OF EUROPEANS" GOOGLE+ CIRCLE
You can still cast your votes there.
https://plus.google.com/106393478695568433143/posts/62vZyfksGGk

And as promised the most important circle: you, the people!
The very first shared circle of 500 Europeans who got into action on my call out on Monday.
The last thing we want is a small elite running this place so we need more peeps from all over Europe to participate and enjoy G+

I hope this post can do the rounds through Europe and gets us firmly on the G+ map. So even if you´re not European yourself, but sympathize with the initiatives to form a community here, help spread the word and share it.

And don´t forget: we all love the other continents and most of us have circles which encompass the whole world. So it´s not against others, but pro us :)

If you got this through a share this link will bring you back to the discussion:https://plus.google.com/112352920206354603958/posts/PDUi13o9dB1

Excellent work putting this all together Max. It needed someone to kickstart us into clubbing together. Hi fellow Euro Circlers :)

Great idea and experiment!

Max, this is a great post - will share and hopefully it will bind people together. I do not think it is a separation of continents; instead it is kinda more like a separation of timezones (which Im not too bothered about)!

For example; my stream used to be only interesting at night due to the majority of americans I follow. By adding more europeans, I hope that the content will flourish during the day as well!

I have a question. I'm from Spain and I follow people who post either in spanish or english as I understand both. But I know that many people don't understand spanish, german, italian, portuguese, etc... Do you use some addon to translate posts in languages you don't speak?

yes. +Roque Serantes I use the google chrome extension by +Josh Estelle of the official Chrome translate project. It´s a very neat extension as it just integrates into G+. Link someone?

Oops sorry +Max Huijgen . I was in the midst of writing about how exciting it is to be joining this community, yet appear to have posted nonsense from my phone!

yeah, would be great if You add me too, I am from Czech republic and I am not a porn star :)

It makes more sense to introduce yourself in the Part 2 post as linked in the post above. Very difficult to keep track otherwise

This explains why I seem to get a lot of followers. Not bad but it is a lot at once.

Humbled down twice today!
2 Bullets!
One to the knee from fearless +Colby Brown and this second finish off to the head by master mind +Max Huijgen Admit it you both! You teamed up and had it planed hadn't you!?
All I can do now is head to bed! I have a feeling I'm in for a surprise in the morning! ;)

Thank you both. looks like I'm just gonna have to behave in public now ://

You better produce quality posts from now +Gunther D The world is watching!

And sharing would be a good start +Gunther D It´s a large responsibility to be famous :)

thought so :) have to read up I guess.

shared - lets grow this euro baby and eat loads of chips (yeah the hot ones) with mayonnaise while we're at it

+Max Huijgen thank you for including me in this circle of fellow Europeans!

Perhaps a European Politicians circle next?

this is great but as this is about europe i will wait till tomorrow to reshare it to get a better effect ;)) thanks for putting that together!

At 19.00 I've left home to go to the theater. I had 773 circlers. When I've come back, at about 23.30, I've found 879. Now I realize what hapened. Thanks.

I knew I had to have been mentioned somewhere. Some 90+ followers in 8 hours don't come from the wild.

Oddly enough no mention about the circle and G+ only notifies 10+ new followers.

Adding the full circle.

I am a South African living in Germany (and soon to be living in Belgium) - Do I count? Or do you have to be a European?

+Jordi Vicens +Víktor Bautista i Roca and others who suddenly got an influx of new people. You were one of the ´Europeans active on G+´ and I wanted to share people who took the trouble to react on my call to name their countries. Now you have to live up to it ;)
I didn´t want to do yet another circle of the same group as I believe there are very interesting people in Europe who just need to be heard.

*Keep the sharing going as that´s our best chance to find fellow Europeans and get us together in our virtual hangout +Europeans on G+ !

Nice effort. Tanks. I'd be glad to meet more Europeans here.

Remember that you will only be added if you got the PART2 post of Europeans. I don´t monitor this one. Check the post for the link

Good work. But just European photographers, living anywhere?, or all photographers living in Europe?

It´s not restricted to photographers at all +Maurice Loy As far as the ´European´ question. If you feel European and you share the same time zone approximately it makes sense. But it´s up to the people to decide themselves. There are no rules.

Ok I agree with this opened attitude. Thanks

Guess I missed the boat on this one, I'm an artist from the UK. Maybe I should start a European artists circle!?

Were you in the first 500 who reacted on my call +Tom Voute? I am not aware of it, but you knew the topic existed, so no it was not personal at all.

+Max Huijgen
Bob Marley e Eric Clapton - Knocking on Heavens Door ( :
Can't find no one ukrainian , russian or anyone from central and eastern part of Europe.
This is not EU circle ( yes we, Ukraine not in it yet ) , not CoE circle ( Ukraine is in it )
As i understand this circle of all europeans.
And as i remember there was some people from Ukraine,Russia,...
In first 500 comments to Your perfect post on Monday
Anyway good project, i've said already.
Wish You Good Luck in development of europeans "movement" on G+.
Will be glad to help. With all my capabilities.

It makes more sense to introduce yourself in the Part 2 post as linked in the post above. Very difficult to keep track otherwise
And remember in this case sharing is caring as it´s very difficult to reach all Europeans.

+Konstantin Makov You´re in that circle. I´m building a circle meanwhile of CoE so don´t worry. This is a selection of all the countries excluding the right to the Balkan part of Europe. I wanted to avoid the large population of Russian only speakers and will share them separately when I have enough.

in topic part II I see Tom Voute - Holland and Hong Kong. 01:28 Today.
You complained above: Bummer you didn't add me, +Max Huijgen. Hope it wasn't personal.Yesterday 18:20
So you didn´t enter your informatiion before I shared a circle +Tom Voute don´t know what you keep complaining about. You were just not one of the active Europeans. Possibly because Hong Kong is indeed far apart in terms of time zones.

+Gemma Costa were you one of the first 500? Please people just read the post and check for yourself. I try to be as honest as possible, but don´t expect me to hunt every name down. Do realize I´m the one getting 30 notifications per hour and having to manually add everyone to lists. I can hardly keep up with it.

+Max Huijgen I apologize for misunderstanding, I have many notifications too all the day long because I take care of many themes on google plus but I am never rude with those who get something wrong, my regards

Maybe read this post https://plus.google.com/u/0/112352920206354603958/posts/9buryXS7Z4b first +Sandile Mfecane It´s all about getting people who share a common heritage and a time zone together. I would applaud it when Africa would bundle its forces and have a central platform.
We would immediately befriend them like we did with the new formed Canadian circle.
We all have people we follow all over the continents. I have posted mine once and there hardly countries in which I didn´t follow at least one person. In fact the whole circle concept is based on the idea that you can be part of many circles of interest. You can be a photographer and a European and part of a cooking circle.

+Sandile Mfecane i am not sure in what world you are living it to suppose that having a list of people who share a common interest is discriminating against you.

Or is it also discrimination in your mind that for example I do not subscribe to Max circle for the simple fact, that there are mixed languages in there and I only subscribe to people who post in languages I understand?

It is really hard to find my neighbours and you may like it or not, but i do have an interest to find other europeans more than i have an interest in finding the canadian circle, a south american circle or an asian circle.

Please leave the victim mentality. Nothing here is limiting anybody, if at all it is bringing more attention.

If there would be a circle of 'Africans on G+' that would gather more attention than many other things. And it would be even more effective if that would be 'Africans on G+ who post in english'.

+Max Huijgen as You can understand i was talking not about me in this or another circle, but about Europe. And artificial boundaries... ( :

+Max Huijgen +Sandile Mfecane I think that both the European and the African circles might bump in to one fence. In both circles you will have native speakers in 1 to N countries. Some of them speak a common language like French or English but a larger part of the people only know one language, their own.

If the translation tools are really good then this should not be a problem but I do doubt about the tools doing job. This might lead to confusion.

+Sandile Mfecane From that post the crucial quote: "With this new tool other continents can do the same as we Europeans are now doing: get together and bundle forces to get ourselves heard. Every individual African country has only a low number of peeps, but as a continent they could unite like we Europeans are doing right now"

Yes now I understand where you're coming from. +Sandile Mfecane And why you advocated against separatism when I shared the post!
Well let me put it very simply, If you look at my profile photo, I am the very definition of it! Top that with ancestors and living family on each continent!
Some fact do remain, I must always take into consideration is that, I can not address a native American the way I will address a native Italian or French! I want to be aware of that. Simply. And +Max Huijgen call will help me achieve that more efficiently.
Beside the idea of common interest there is a necessary need to counter influences that will keep the stream of knowledge and ideas multi directional!* Because experiences comes from diversity and until we have designed a more civilized way to interact with one another.
I always say, we're not civilized yet! But we're getting there! And defining where each and everyone comes from is part of it. I do want my followers to know I am a European because it will help them to engage with me with the basic knowledge that I may not think the same way or ok it's Saturday 3am now in Prague, I posted a comment that don't make too much sense right now. but will later on ( when I edited it)
It allow and help us to make choices that reflect what we want to experience and with who!
We are NOT all compatible! Thinking otherwise is missing the point of learning from one another!

On the contrary! Contesting it is what gives it all it's meaning! Helping us understanding that the actions and choices we are making now will affect us (and everyone connected to us) tomorrow!
The part you are "playing" in this "transition state we all are in" is more important than the one "we" play as you questions the so called (established) thinking or choice of a broad vs few.

I am questioning the very purpose of this "Eu circle" since your first comment and while researching, I came across some very outrageous and disturbing views and opinions.

Still I feel (I am 1 individual only) it is necessary for our growth. We're primates! We're not civilized yet! Let's keep on learning from each other shall we? Until some day maybe let's hope...

+Gunther D I agree with your explanations. Regarding the disturbing views in the first shared circle of Europeans: yes, that will be true for every circle which is not restricted by more than a continent and a time zone.
Bulk import 500 random Americans, Asians or Africans and you will notice that you don´t agree just because they have this in common. What I do is, import them all and weed out what doesn´t interest me. I´m not easily disturbed, but why clutter my stream with content I don´t like.
However so far the incoming stream from that circle is better than from the first 1600 I bulk imported at the first day of July as ´the list to have´ by some high profile user. 70% of the actives ones tried to sell me stuff, talked about the same San Franciso steak house or were all hyped up ´awesomeness´. Most of them however just stopped posting after a month as they were apparently only here to see what was cool and switched to Path or whatever.
Remember this is not a curated circle but the first 500 who responded on a call for action. They showed themselves to be active on g+ and European. No further endorsement.

+Sandile Mfecane I think a similar group for Africans on G+ would be very valuable. Like I wrote in the ´Continent view´ article about +CircleCount giving Africa a voice will help.

+Max Huijgen the problem with following you is that there is always so much to read... Plus a large volley of interesting answers/opinions!

I´m sorry +Paul Williams I actually don´t write large number of posts, but I try to share ideas and opinions instead of recycling yesterday´s newspapers or last century´s email jokes :)

+Max Huijgen no apology required, I wasn't complaining it's the diversity that makes it so interesting. Thanks again.

+Sandile Mfecane Leadership aaah no no no... not in a million years! There's no such thing as Leadership! We're all teachers! We're all students! We're just not all aware of it! ;)

However this makes more sense now! And yes you are right to feel wary. Here's why:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/106393478695568433143/posts/62vZyfksGGk

When 1 among 7 billions acclaim<<--(not sure this is the right word) defining whose BEST. Then yes I, and many feel hurt!
Not angry, frustrated, outrage, or else... just hurt.
Many of us experience separatism and discrimination through out our lives and at different degrees. These many are often armed with thicker tolerance.
+Max Huijgen primary motivation with this initiative was/is to counter-balance so the few have more weight vs the broad!
but it will nonetheless be misinterpreted by many who care not but for the like of themselves.
Quote:(see link)
...prefer to focus on quality rather than quantity... Let me think now and i'll take a deep breath. Isn't it what Hitler did!?

There no best! There's those ahead and those behind. I wish they'll be more looking over their shoulders offering a hand!

There will always be groups! Defining these Groups is something we still need to learn how to do! ;)

+Sandile Mfecane I'm South African! Not famous... YET. :D
I was pretty "well known" though, in South Africa, in the horsey world. Saffies ROCK! I miss my home!

+Sandile Mfecane I don´t know why you are so negative about my very simple initiative which you can repeat immediately yourself. Check how this circle was created and offer to do the same as I did. I just made myself a Guinea pig of an experiment by offering to circle everyone who just responded on a ´call for action´ and was European. No obligations, no need to circle me, etc.
I read that others got 600 new people through it, which is great for these ordinary Europeans. I got a lot less new people through it as a lot of these active Europeans were already in my circles.
So do exactly the same and offer a small stimulus in exchange for people mentioning their location. I can´t understand why you feel excluded or want to criticize met.

+Max Huijgen and +Sandile Mfecane I think you both may be interested in the World Nations Circle project which is being curated by +Jürgen Hubert. He is asking for 3 males and 3 females from each nation on a first come first served basis to join the circle to help provide a taste of all over the world in one circle. I am sure this will give more representation for Africans and also Europeans, again helping to rebalance +Google+ from the perceived North American centric bias. Link to Nations project: http://plus.google.com/105510708763837902389/posts/CtbMgpvRUk9 I hope this helps!

+Jürgen Hubert great minds think alike I just edited my post to include the link and then saw your comment ::Grin:: I hope you don't mind me calling but I guess I see the potential for synergy here!

Running around in circles +Sandile Mfecane and to me it seems you don´t grasp the concept of circles. I have many circles, only one of them is Europeans. And me having a sway over people trying to setup elite circuits? I´m a very small player on G+ and go mostly unnoticed. My follower count is somewhere in the 9000. Not 90.000, nor 900.000 like others have.
But let´s end this fruitless discussion. Maybe someone else will setup an African circle and when he or she knocks at my door I will put all my ´sway´ behind it ;)

I don't generally like to advice on anything. A one to one hangout might help a good deal if care to deal there is!
Written words are great! Spoken ones are greater! ;)

Just a personal thought

I can't imagine the mess my inbox would be if we had a world circle, sandile.
:-) I try and read all my streams, if I followed everyone... Nightmare!

Time to reshare this circle people as so far I haven´t been able to add more than 700 or so Europeans to my circles! +Europeans on G+ does a bit better, but didn´t reach the 2000 so far. Looking at the real figures there are at tens of millions of Europeans who apparently never noticed this topic.

We can get to 2000+ followers with all of your support.

Bit late on this one but great share thanks
