Is Dementia Preventable?

Experts say that one-third of the world’s dementia cases could be prevented by managing lifestyle factors such as hearing loss, hypertension and depression.

This remarkable fact was part of a report by the first Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention and Care that was presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2017 and published in The Lancet. The report also highlighted the beneficial effects of nonpharmacologic interventions such as social contact and exercise for people with dementia.

“There’s been a great deal of focus on developing medicines to prevent dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease,” said commission member and AAIC presenter Dr. Lon Schneider, professor of psychiatry and the behavioral sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. “But we can’t lose sight of the real major advances we’ve already made in treating dementia, including preventive approaches.”

The commission brought together 24 international experts to systematically review existing research and provide evidence-based recommendations for treating and preventing dementia. About 47 million people have dementia worldwide and that number is expected to climb as high as 66 million by 2030 and 115 million by 2050.

A persons ability to process life gets damaged as they experience adverse situations in life. The many moments of a trauma all need to be digested or they can congest the life digestive system.

While some people with strong digestive abilities can handle trauma quite well not everyone has the same iron horse digestive system.

I will speak from my own experience now as I am one of those people who experienced repeated physical abuse (extreme spanking over the years) which led to parts of me shutting down internally to the fullness of who I am.

Was I a HSP, highly sensitive person my whole life, no. I was actually pretty dead to my inner truths and emotions and did not really understand why or recognize my numbness.

In 1984 I was in a year long intensive personal transformation program which helped me begin to wake up to my deep inner truths. After months of weekly groups and private sessions with one of the psychologists who ran the program I started to wake up and rise out of my comatose emotional state. After about 6 months I started to notice I was very sensitive to the deep emotional process of others in the group and could really understand them. This was part of a journey which opened me to access my HSP gift.

HSP can be a two sided sword. I would not trade my ability to be sensitive to others and the world for anything. On the other hand being highly sensitive can have a very high price. With my challenges to assimilate life has come extreme sensitivity reactions to most foods, environments and other peoples emotional energies. I grew up sneezing 100x in a row, having a drippy nose, fatigue, brain fog, dyslexia, shutting down, and a list of other challenges as my body and mind struggled to process my world.

Fifty years later I have finally figured out ways to prevent my sensitivity reactions. It does not mean that most of the sensitivities aren't still there, I just now know how to navigate life to avoid reactions. It takes work every day but the trade off is I now have the best health of my life without any pills or supplements which by the way can also trigger reactions.

"On her website, Aron says a HSP might feel the need to withdraw during busy days, into bed or a private place; they make it a high priority to arrange their lives to avoid upsetting or overwhelming situations; they have rich and complex inner lives"

I have had to be self centered to create a life which truly allows me to feel at my best all the time. I cannot follow the path of the masses, I must flow through life to my own rhythm which I finally know and reasonably understand.

YES, emotional sensitivity is very real.
