It's a good day when your biggest worry is what to do with the kids when you have so much extra time.  Day 1 and 2- have been very smooth.  Minor glitches, but nothing that took us out of the game.

Thanks to this community for all of the collaboration and support.

1st round of PARCC has launched successfully.  We made the mistake of entering username and password for our 3rd graders prior to testing the sound.  This translates to having to exit the session, turn the sound up, resume the session- IF the sound wasn't on prior to us launching the session.  We'll keep you posted on how this plays out.

Have people already added their sessions to the blue site?  We want to get ahead of this but don't want to break anything.

For those of you going forth with keyboards and iPads for PARCC testing.  What are your plans for the least amount of touches to each iPad?

We thought we could push a profile via our MDM, but the profiles don't always grab right away, so we're worried we'd have about 80% of the kids with the right profile and the rest having to be individually configured.

What's your plan?

From Wes Bruce regarding Chromebooks-

Wes sent the question about Chromebooks not being able to access the PARCC practice tests to Pearson.  Here is the response that he received.    Please let both Wes and Jamey Baiter know if schools are still having problems after using the solution below.

The Chromebook app will work with the training site. Test Administrators will just need to verify that the correct environment is selected prior to login information. If you open the TestNav app and it's already at a login screen it will be in the same environment it was left in the last time (which could possibly be the wrong one). If the credentials aren't working what they'll need to do is click on the user icon in the top right and select "Choose a different customer site", then it takes them back out to the main screen where they can click the drop-down that says "Select your test", and they should choose "PARCC Training" and then click the blue button "Go to Customer site". The login credentials from the training site should work correctly on this screen.

Technical Issues  -

From +Keith Bockwoldt :

Greetings - Yesterday we attempted a very large trial test with 450 students in the gymnasium. The trial consisted of using 6 high density APs, iPads, Casper Focus and wireless keyboards. All technology met the specifications and was validated on the iTRAX website. There were numerous problems ranging from having students re-associate to an AP to TestNav errors. In the end, it did not go well and consider it a failure. Yes, this is the reason we test...to work out the bugs and be prepared.

While we dissected the testing and now know what measures need to be in place come test time, the pure amount of staff (both technical and administrative) is exhaustive.

This reminds us of what happened in Indiana last year when the server couldn't handle the volume of testing.

From watching the different lists, there are concerns throughout the state. However, there is something that can be done. When speaking with my superintendent, he mentioned he met with legislators yesterday. They (the legislators) informed him he is the only superintendent that had concerns. He feels strongly that PARCC can be stopped this year. He suggested that all tech directors, CTOs, CIOs, Board members and superintendents contact their legislators http://www.ilga.gov/ & http://ilraiseyourhand.org/content/park-parcc

If you're struggling with preparing for PARCC, please consider contacting your local legislator. Many voice can make an impact!

Question about make-ups.  Could we set up a testing session with multiple tests- ex. Two kids, two different tests-  ELA Grade 3 Unit 1, Math Grade 4 Unit 2?

Exactly what +Gerry Mattix-Wand said... They could be in the same space, but they will be different technical sessions. On the flip side, +Maureen Chertow Miller, how are you already thinking about make-up sessions? You win #PARCC  for today. Amazing! :)

The 2015 Northern Illinois Computing Educators (NICE) MiniCon is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2015. Last year, MiniCon brought over 400 educators to Niles North High School to learn from each other and share all about education technology. We had over 40 sessions, an engaging keynote, an amazing raffle, and even a student-led iPad playground.

This year, we hope to expand our offerings and invite you to submit a proposal for this year’s conference.

Call for Presenters
Do you (or someone you know):

• have an innovative/engaging technology-integrated unit or project that really works for your students?
• use an iPad, Chromebook, or other mobile device in your classroom?
• use STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) real world projects with your students?
• have a creative/collaborative project for Special Education? for English as a Second Language, or for Foreign Language?
• have an idea for a session that shows best practices, innovation, or student engagement using technology for teaching and learning?

Please share your experience and expertise with your friends and colleagues.  MiniCon is a great way to share your ideas in a low key, yet engaging environment.  It’s also a nice lead-in for the ICE Conference in February.

The details…
WHERE?  Niles North High School (Skokie, IL)
WHEN?  Saturday, January 31, 2014, from 8:00 am-1:30 pm
WHY? Because you’ll be a part of the best local, affordable (still just $5!), and immediate professional development experience around.

Submit your proposal online today!

Proposals are due by the end of day, Friday, December 12, 2014

Please share the call for proposal link or our website with any educators you think would be interested.
