When my Mom recently passed away, we immediately thought of Wayne to play for her memorial service at Wailuku Union Church. With everything else that was going on with her passing, it was such a relief and comforting to have Wayne provide the music. It took very little input from the family-Wayne's intuition and music sense resulted in a choice of music which perfectly set the mood. He played background music while the family greeted guests and did a solo selection during the contemplative part of the service. Can't say much more than the whole experience, from beginning to end, was perfectly choreographed and executed. Our family expresses our deepest appreciation to Wayne, for being an important part of creating special memories and honoring my Mom's life. Mahalo, Wayne!

There aren't enough superlatives to adequately express what an amazing experience it is to learn to play an instrument with Wayne! Far beyond simply teaching the mechanics of making sound, from day one, he is teaching his students to be musicians and to truly feel the music. He blends the relaxed approach of living in the Island Style with a breadth of experience that comes from a lifelong commitment to his art. He has studied with great masters and willingly and joyfully shares his knowledge with anyone willing to learn. I extensively searched the San Francisco Bay area for a Slack Key teacher and was disappointed with the results. Wayne suggested lessons by Skype and it actually works! While I'd really rather "hang with Wayne" and learn from him in person on Maui, somehow, he is able to make the lessons equally as effective via Skype, despite the distance. Regardless of your level of musical expertise (or lack of) I assure you, Wayne has a lot to offer to you in experiencing a unique way of learning to play an instrument- and to relish the results.

I wanted my son to learn to play ukelele and had tried other teachers that weren't connecting with my him. I could tell after speaking with Wayne that this experience would be different and after watching a lesson, I wanted to learn to play the ukelele also. He has a gift for engaging children and teaching. I feel like learning to play the ukelele for me will help me to relax more deeply and will be a wonderful thing to share with my son. I highly recommend Wayne, best teacher you can find!

Dear Wayne, Thank you for being so easy and fun to work with. You are such a talented musician and we were blessed to have found you to play at our wedding and reception. You went above and beyond our expectations and really helped with the flow of the reception. I didn't have to worry about a thing. And, thank you for suggesting the hula performance by Shekinah. She was beautiful and exciting to watch. Rylie still talks about doing the hula with her. We appreciate your friendliness and easygoing nature, not to mention your beautiful playing and singing. Thank you so much. You really made our day complete!

Wayne & Shekinah, We want to say thank you SO much for your beautiful music and dancing on our wedding day. Even though we had a very good feeling from the start, you both managed to exceed our expectations. I'm sure you could tell that our guests really enjoyed your entertainment and we received so many compliments (that rightfully belong to you) throughout the night. I only caught the last part of 'Harvest Moon' but Paul said it sounded great and a bunch of our friends were talking about it after. 'First Day of My Life' sounded awesome too. It was all perfectly timed and executed, and the way you played lightly throughout the ceremony was absolutely perfect. It was also really easy to communicate with you right from the start, which was a real blessing with all the craziness of wedding planning. It was stress-free from start to finish! The cocktail hour ran very smoothly and we got many compliments from our guests. Again, we were SO happy with your music and dancing. Talk soon, Andrea & Paul

After loosing part of my left hand in a motorcycle accident, I thought my guitar playing days were over. I soon discovered that we are much more adaptable than we know. With determination, innovation, and the relaxed and insightful approach Wayne Perry uses in his teaching, I am steadily building the confidence and skill I need to overcome this disability. With Wayne’s help, I am beginning to once again develop the skills needed to do the thing I love so well. Mahalo Wayne for helping to bring music back into my life.

Years ago I read a book called 'The Inner Game of Tennis' by Timothy Gallwey. When Mr. Gallwey was teaching tennis, first he'd have the student try and hit the ball back and forth with him as many times as possible. Usually the beginning student could only do it about one or two times. Then the instructor would ask the student to notice their inner dialog when they missed the ball. It was often a series of self deprecating remarks. Next the instructor would ask the student to clear his mind and simply say "bounce hit, bounce hit". With that simple exercise the student would continue to hit the ball sometimes as many as 45 times without interruption. It was the "Zen" of tennis. Wayne Perry teaches music in much the same way. He helps you take the effort out of it and relax. He showed me that I didn't need to have sore fingers from pressing the strings so hard. Relax. He showed me how to find my own comfortable way to hold my instrument so that both arms and hands were free to play my instrument, with the emphasis being on the word "Play". He encourages one to have fun with it. One session with Wayne has made all the difference in the world for me and I highly recommend him. I told him he should write the book, 'The Tao of Ukulele'. Aloha, Andrea von Botefuhr

This video goes out to one of my Skype students living in California. "Joe" started as a total newbie, and has learned to play two Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar songs in open G "Taro Patch" tuning. We're starting on song #3 this week!
