Panda is coming...

Panda update rolling out

Earlier this week, we started a slow rollout of an improved Panda algorithm, and we expect to have everything done sometime next week.

Based on user (and webmaster!) feedback, we’ve been able to discover a few more signals to help Panda identify low-quality content more precisely. This results in a greater diversity of high-quality small- and medium-sized sites ranking higher, which is nice.

Depending on the locale, around 3-5% of queries are affected.

Help search engines and screen readers for the visually impaired understand images on your site. To do so, write helpful alt text in the HTML and also add descriptive text near the image on the page.

Sometimes website owners report that they see little or no data for their site in Webmaster Tools. This can happen if the site is indexed under a different domain. For example, maybe you verified www.example.com but the preferred version of your site or the version Google has indexed is example.com (the non-www version). Make sure to verify all URL versions to see data for that site.

Here's more instructions if your data is missing or out of date: http://goo.gl/PjSsyu

If you want your site to be in Chrome's HSTS preload list (aka, default to HTTPS), submit it here: http://bit.ly/1oq7JG0 - note that Firefox and Safari include Chrome's preload list... 3 for the price of 1! Great deal.

Structured Snippets

A new kind of snippet a few of you noticed recently, called structured snippets. As the post says, Structured Snippets is a new feature that incorporates facts into individual result snippets in Web Search.

It's not structured data (schema.org) driven! Instead, it's powered by algos that try to find interesting tables within webpages to extract the key facts related to the topic of the page. This deeper understanding of the contents, plus some quality checks, gives us a new kind of snippet.

Big updates to our robots.txt tool:

Allowing webmasters to opt-out of having their sites crawled is very important for most search engines. We updated our robots.txt tool in Webmaster Tools to make it easier for you to manage your robots.txt files, test URLs and see directives that are affecting the crawling, and review historical versions.

Give the new robots.txt testing tool a try: http://goo.gl/261CQS

#WebmasterNews for all: HTTPS is now a ranking signal in our search ranking algorithms

Here at Google, protecting user data and offering secure sites are at the forefront of our goals, and we want the rest of the web to adopt these important goals too. That's why we're now using HTTPS as a ranking signal in Google Search.

While this ranking signal affects fewer than 1% of global queries, we want to encourage website owners to make security a top priority and switch from HTTP to HTTPs. And don't worry—we have resources, videos and best practices to help you in the process. Check out our blog post for a list of these resources and more information regarding this algorithmic update: http://goo.gl/zPJlfH.
