What's frightening is that we have an Attorney-General who thinks that sourcing content from overseas and paying for it is "piracy". What's worse is that we have a media that regurgitates this bullshit unquestioningly.

Remember, kids, it's only okay for multinationals to benefit from the economics of international retail.
Consumer advocates are warning a new copyright bill could eliminate the option for Aussies hoping to keep their online activities under wraps.

Hilariously, data retention undermines this completely.  Under data retention, VPNs are used for privacy, not piracy.  It should be entertaining to watch vested interests try to argue for both, or neither, at random.

I really hope that the next person who tries to convince me that the LNP are great economic managers will choke on their own words and die.
The Abbott government will spend up to $11 million of taxpayer's money on its controversial Intergenerational Report advertising campaign starring science broadcaster Karl Kruszelnicki.

Interesting perspective on Australia's right to political communication, with regards to Scott McIntyre's sacking.
The incident of Scott McIntyre’s sacking from his job as SBS soccer commentator for having criticised the ANZAC rituals around the country and the world has again sparked discussion on “freedom of ...

While the ALP continue to let the LNP frame debates and support their bullshit rhetoric by engaging in it themselves, they'll never be anything more than LNP-lite.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has signalled a harder line on asylum seeker policy under a ;future ;Labor government, while ;also declaring Labor remained "pro-refugees".

Do you know what is most upsetting to the AFP about the recent executions?

"Public references to blood on our hands, to shopping the Bali Nine in exchange for some conspiracy, cartoons depicting the AFP as the firing squad or the Grim Reaper are not only misinformed and ill guided, they are in my view in very bad taste."

That's right, they're more upset about how they're viewed by the public than over their complicitness in the deaths of two Australians. Thankfully they've learned their lesson, though, and it won't happen again:

"Asked if the AFP would make the same decision again, Andrew Colvin says the guidelines have changed substantially since 2005 so he cannot give an ironclad yes or no."

Remember, kids, these are the people who will soon have access to all of your metadata.
AFP commissioner Andrew Colvin says no apology is necessary for the force’s controversial role in the case of the Bali Nine

The mixed-reality headset is remarkable. But it isn't remarkable in the way that the simulated demos and promotional images suggest it is.

A reminder that Labor are not the leaders you're looking for.

"I certainly have a view, though, that the best way to win the argument on marriage equality is to convince people not force them"

Yes, it's always best to convince people that you're as human as them and entitled to the same rights as them. Historically that's always worked so well.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten rejects his deputy's call to force Labor MPs and senators to support same-sex marriage.

"When nonviolence is preached as an attempt to evade the repercussions of political brutality, it betrays itself. When nonviolence begins halfway through the war with the aggressor calling time out, it exposes itself as a ruse. When nonviolence is preached by the representatives of the state, while the state doles out heaps of violence to its citizens, it reveals itself to be a con. And none of this can mean that rioting or violence is "correct" or "wise," any more than a forest fire can be "correct" or "wise." Wisdom isn't the point tonight. Disrespect is. In this case, disrespect for the hollow law and failed order that so regularly disrespects the community."
