Congressional Cemetery, Washington, D.C., is a site most tourists won't visit. It's way off the National Mall, in S.E., and it's a little macabre, especially with all the lookalike cenotaphs of dead Congressmen. But it's worth seeing, if only to visit the graves of some famous and infamous Washingtonians.

Fishing on a seemingly unnamed lake on the Rideau canal chain of lakes. On maps, I've seen it simply referred to as the Cataraqui River, which was probably the original name of the river before it was flooded and became a lake.

I agree, I'd like to see the "Hero's Journey" (to quote Joseph Campbell) just once become "the Heroine's Journey"; or at the very least, could we have a female Sith, please? Even "Clone Wars" had one. But making movies of the Expanded Universe crap? No, no, no. I do NOT want to go to a movie for a scene in which Han Solo cooks Leia dinner.
Disney just killed off years of nerdy, feminist stories in favor of Star Wars Episode VII. It is a terrible loss.

From the Washington Times, January 16, 1914. The good Doctor Littlefield makes a correlation between bedbugs, civilization, and cancer, and from that infers causation. Science!

Our cats, Sugar and Spice, playing. These two are sisters, never apart. If they are separated in the house, one of them will search for the other, crying.

"Outbursts of Everett True", Seattle Star, January 16, 1914. Was Everett True really expressing what people were thinking, but were too polite to say, in 1914? Or was he just an asshole? I do wonder that he had any friends, or a wife for that matter.

A cartoon from the front page of the Tacoma Times, Friday December 12, 1913. We lament the commercialization of Christmas and wax nostalgic over Christmas in the "old days" when kids were happy with a bright new penny in their stocking, but shopping has been part of the season for a long, long time. Most remarkable about this cartoon, besides the sexism in "Dad" being the one who feeds the pocketbook so that (presumably) Mom can spend it, is that's it's December 12 and, apparently, the shopping hasn't really started yet.

We come to Baltimore at least once a year and always make it a point to eat here. The past two years, we've even had the same server, Terry. He's cheerful and chatty and attends to our table like he doesn't have anyone else to serve. I've been to Chicago several times and had authentic Chicago deep dish pizza. I actually prefer Uno's to what I've eaten in local non-chain restaurants in Chicago. The pizza sauce is excellent and we love the big chunks of tomatoes. The crust is light and buttery, almost pastry-like. On this occasion (March 7, 2013), I also tried the surf and turf: steak tenderloin tips, crab cake, mashed potatoes and broccoli. The steak was peppery and tender and the crab cake delicious. In spring and summer there is the option of sitting outside on the deck and watching the boats on the harbor. I highly recommend Uno's if you're in the inner harbor area and want a delicious family dinner.
