Took Monday off for no especially pressing reason, other than to make dinner at the end of the day. Already feeling relaxed.

Our cat Luna gave us quite a scare. High fever, vomiting, and obvious extreme discomfort. Two nights at the emergency vet, and she seems to be well on the mend. We hope to be picking her up this afternoon. It looks like the culprit was a virus that led to a bacterial infection. Poor little cat!

Sometimes, the bold move is to stay put. I think that's where I am.

Deactivated my facebook account about a month ago. Not sorry I did it. But I am coming to realize how many people I know are difficult to contact any other way. Strange how in some ways, technology can disconnect.

AWS re:Invent - Just a tragic example of a conference that is not at all inclusive of women. I attended 18 breakout sessions and viewed all of the keynotes, and saw a total of one woman on stage. In Las Vegas, in many ways a monument to sexism. Embarrassing.

People's feelings about the power of their social media actions are fascinating. Generally delusional, IMO, but quite interesting to observe.

It takes creativity to come up with a name for something that doesn't have an occupied domain name - unless you're willing to go with one of those gauche new top level domains, that is.

This post is for purposes of getting a gloat out of my system, because doing it in any other forum might be damaging.

So...gloat gloat gloat. You had your chance (multiple chances, really), and you blew it.

OK, I feel better now. :)

Here are some interesting numbers:

Currently, there are around 42 million foreign born people living in the United States. 70% of them live in one of seven states: California, Texas, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and New Jersey - states which contain 44% of the total U.S. population. The remaining 43 states contain the remaining 30% of the foreign-born population.

That means that much of this anti-immigrant sentiment originates in places where there are actually relatively few immigrants.

Nice morning walk at the Chicago Botanical Gardens. Then lunch and a nap. Now for a little grilled delight for dinner.
